PETA: People for the Euthanasia of Trusting Animals
I was shocked by a report that the prominent, US based, animal charity PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) kill most of the pets committed to their care. I didn t believe it, so I went online.
I had a look at the PETA website and found their uncompromising stand on euthanasia ! They eulogise the use of sodium pentoparbial to painlessly deal with surplus animals.
They then point attention away from themselves by complaining about other animal shelters that use less humane methods to deal with excess animals. They also point to the over breeding of some pets and the criminal lack of care for pets by some people. Yes, these problems need tackling but killing a animal whose only crime is to trust you cannot be the answer.
How many people have, through old age, illness, homelessness or some other tragedy, handed their much loved animal companions to PETA, sure that their animal family members will be cared for?
It will be too late for those animals now, but I feel for all those who through misguided trust have signed their loved one s death warrant when they signed them over to PETA. How must they feel?
There is lots of cold, hard reasoning on the PETA website: some of well reasoned, some far from it. But what is conspicuous by its absence is love.
I could detect no compassion or love for the animals that are the reason for PETA s existence. PETA calls for the ethical treatment of animals but any ethics that is not based on compassion, on love, is the ethics of the of the dangerous extremist. It is the ethics of the Nazi death camp: Hitler had a surplus of Jews, Gypsies and Gays so why not get rid of the surplus by euthanasia, in modern humane gas chambers?
I am sure that there are many people who support PETA who really do love animals, their animals and all animals.
I hope that those loving people can work their magic on PETA to open its eyes to the flaw in its ethics and turn PETA into the PLTA: People for the Loving Treatment of Animals.
