Swaffham Spring Clean

A special week of activity to spruce up the town started on Monday 22nd April when a team of volunteers met outside the Market Cross Caf to take on various cleaning and litter picking tasks.

Baroness Gillian Shephard is a keen supporter of this initiative. Although her House of Lords schedule meant she was unable to attend the launch, she said It was very nice to hear of this co-ordinated effort to spring clean the town. I wish all the volunteers every success and look forward to seeing the results of their hard work as the week progresses.

A team from Swaffham Lions took part; they spent two hours litter picking and de weeding an area of the town and were amazed at the number of cigarette butts that had been just thrown on the ground.

The Lions were happy to be involved as helping the community is what Lions are about.

Four members of the Swaffham Rotary Club also spent a very busy afternoon. Their allocated tasks included sprucing up the two town telephone boxes and litter picking and cutting grass in the small Whitecross Road cemetery. Those involved where President Claire Dunne, Malcolm Whittley, Alan Henry and Denis Bishop.

The Spring Clean was one of the actions from the Swaffham Town Regeneration Project a newly-formed partnership between the Swaffham Business Forum, the Advance Swaffham Action Group and the town council.

Local businesses are also getting involved to co-ordinate any planned maintenance to be done, to create a really positive impact on the town centre.
