Grinstead steal points from the Magpies

EAST Grinstead brushed aside the complacency of last week, producing a thoroughly professional performance to see off Harleston Magpies on Sunday.

Tabitha Worsley and Pippa Rabey got the goals in a fine team performance. With leaders Holcombe, who had looked like running away with the league, losing at home to St Albans, there is everything to play for in the second half of the season.

  1. ATTACK-MINDED: Ruth Gordon in possession

“Harleston are a really good side, but I thought we were much better than them,” team manager Georgie Howell said. “The supporters probably thought the last five minutes weren’t that comfortable, but we felt fairly comfy.

“We were dominant and defended stoutly. It was a completely different performance from the week before.

It was a team performance, with none of the complacency of the Horsham game.”

Worsley got the goal after just four minutes, deflecting in Jojo Davis’ lofted ball brilliantly.

Rabey made it 2-0 on 42 minutes, firing home a penalty corner and while Charlotte Harrison pulled one back late on, Grinstead were comfortable. Alice Pyrgos, on her return to the team, was outstanding, producing a man-of-the-match performance.

And Howell was further buoyed when news filtered through that leaders Holcombe had gone down at home.

“Sarah Embrey scored for St Albans and she plays for us indoors. She was down at training last week and we told her, ‘You can beat them’,” Howells said. “If you believe you can, you will.

They have done us a massive favour. We could have done without losing to Horsham. If we hadn’t, we’d only be a point behind.

Holcombe aren’t invincible.

It’s really encouraging and now we’re not just thinking about second place.

“We will be missing Kirsty Mackay for a couple of weeks, who is off to Argentina with England, but Holcombe will be missing a couple of players as well.

We’ve got Chelmsford away this week (Saturday) and hopefully we can get the win.”
