six pointer at Wroxham
The Boro are seven points clear of the drop zone and a win in Norfolk against the team fourth from bottom in Ryman One North would open up a healthy gap to the relegation zone. And with last weekend s game against Burnham Ramblers one of many in the league to fall victim to the weather, Romford s players can t wait to get back on the pitch. Martin said: This is a really good opportunity to pull clear.
We re looking to get a run of wins going and this could be a real six pointer. The postponement was a little bit disappointing but we had a behind closed doors game against Billericay which was useful for match fitness. Plus I got to see a few new faces.
Romford s form has been hit and miss this season after last term s impressive eighth place finish in Ryman One North. They won away to Maldon and Tiptree at the end of October, a team expected to challenge for promotion, but they have lost eight of their first 15 games and sit 17th in the table. Martin can not put his finger on why the Ship Lane outfit have been so inconsistent, but admits his team s attacking philosophy has sometimes counted against them.
He said: I m not sure why we can t get a run going but we always play for wins not draw. On occasions that s cost us. In some of our defeats we ve conceded goals in the last few minutes, but we re not going to change our principles.
We have started defending a lot better which is pleasing and the squad is looking strong. I m going to have to leave four or five players out tomorrow which is a nice headache to have but it s going to test my man management to keep players happy. When questioned on Romford s ambition for this season as it approached the halfway mark, he says survival is the minimum expectation.
But Martin is aware that a run of wins could improve their outlook for 2013/14 in a very congested league. At the start of every season, it s a matter of staying in the league, said the manager. We ve overachived massively by finishing eighth last year but it s got harder and harder since we ve been in the Ryman League.
The league is so congested, anyone arond the middle who wins three in a row will really put themselves in play off contention.
You ve got to aim high.
