19-year-old woman charged with attempted bank robbery
NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) Police responding to a bank robbery in progress Monday afternoon arrived in time to take the suspect into custody.
Investigators say the suspect, 19-year-old Ciara Daniels, walked into the Wells Fargo Bank on Colonial Avenue around 4:30 p.m. She didn t show a weapon or imply she had one, but did demand money from a teller. She didn t get any.
Two minutes later, officers arrested Daniels and charged her with one count attempted robbery.
People are just desperate right now, I guess, said Holly Womack, a server at nearby Koppa Nara Ramen restaurant.
Womack has only worked at the restaurant for one year, but has lived in Ghent 16 years.
She said hearing about crime in the area is no shock.
It doesn t really surprise me, because it seems like the violence in the younger culture is going on a lot more, Womack said.
Signs outside the bank show the Norfolk Police Department has a regular presence there. NPD spokeswoman Melinda Wray told 10 On Your Side there s a substation atop the lobby created for the department s bike patrol.
Womack said she noticed the police vehicles at the bank while working Monday. She said she sympathizes with the bank teller because she was victim of a robbery several years ago.
It was an experience that left her traumatized.
I had to go to counseling for it.
It affects people, being confronted by someone you don t even know, Womack said.
Daniels appeared in court Tuesday morning for an arraignment.
She is being held at Norfolk City Jail without bond, awaiting her next court appearance on September 8.
