Cohasset: Officials Name Acting Police Chief Quigley as Full-Time …
After years of political wrangling, Cohasset selectmen finally appointed a new police chief at their meeting Tuesday night.
Bill Quigley has served as the acting police chief for the last three and half years, and now becomes the full-time police chief after a 4 to 1 vote in favor of the appointment.
Quigley made it through the ups and downs of Cohasset s political landscape, after first being rejected for another candidate after an extensive search.
Quigley spoke about his experience as the acting police chief.
I ve had the unique opportunity to do this for three years. The patrolmen say it must be great to chief, it must be great to be a sergeant, it must be great to be a lieutenant , and I found myself saying jeez, it was really fun being a patrolman! So, you know, it s what you become used to.
Some days the running joke is around January and February that I m an armed accountant.
You know I have papers everywhere and its long days and long nights, and committee meetings and things like that.
But I couldn t be happier.
Karen Quigley is the only selectman to vote against the appointment.
I ve been very consistent since I took the seat, that the appointment of the police chief is a key appointment, and should be made by the permanent town manager, after an independent, professional assessment has been conducted, and that took place.
Unfortunately, a majority of the board choose not to support the town manager s first recommendation.
In my opinion, in doing so, they undermined his authority, they undermined the integrity of the process and as a result, they ve undermined the integrity of this appointment, said Quigley.
