CWA Students Go The Extra Mile For West Norfolk Athletics Club

Level 3 computing students at the King s Lynn campus have unveiled the new-look West Norfolk Athletics Club website, after taking it on as a project alongside their study.

The West Norfolk Athletics Club (WNAC) has, for some time, talked about the need for upgrading its website, but lacked technical knowledge within the organisation to make it happen.

Earlier this year, WNAC committee member Katrina Wasteney, a sports science lecturer at CWA, suggested making the website a student-led project with the college in mind a win-win situation for both sides.

After approaching CWA, a team of level 3 computing students took on the project. Leon Elston, 18, Joao Ferreiara Dos Santos, 19, Tobias Burton, 18, Connor Thorpe, 18 all from Spalding and Alex Wyke, 22, from West Winch, worked on the website for the best part of five months, with the site going live over the last week.

The aim was to create a purpose-designed website to attract new clients to the club and also help to keep existing members satisfied. The new webpages are better structured, more user friendly and contain up to date pictures of the club s athletes and events.

Running club committee member Martin Koenigsberger said: I really like the look of the new website.

It s so much better than what we had before. The fact that people can easily access the new web page via tablets and phones is brilliant.

He added: I have to say Dan Purdy lecturer in computer science at CWA has been a real asset in this. He s helped us beyond just creating the webpages, also in sorting our change in website host and in moving the domain.

Likewise, the students went beyond their initial briefing by making the new webpages also compatible with smart phone use.

The experience has been very positive from the start. I can certainly recommend the college to similar organisations to ours. We are very pleased with the final product.

Daniel Purdy, lecturer in computer science at CWA said: This project has given the students an opportunity to work with real life clients.

It s been a great addition to their course work.
