Toy testing underway to find Peterborough’s Top 10 toys this Christmas

11:22 Wednesday 04 November 2015

Wondering what to buy your little one for Christmas this year? A group of Peterborough children have put the latest toys to the test and here are the results.

Queensgate Shopping Centre invited children in Peterborough to put a selection of high street stores top toys through their paces and determine the city s favourite toy for Christmas 2015.

John Lewis, Argos, Menkind, Tiger and Game put forward a selection of super cool gadgets and gizmos to undergo a rigorous five hours of hands-on playtime, which saw over 300 children crashing, bashing, playing and pushing each toy to their limit as they took on the role of Queensgate s Official Toy Testers.

And the official top 10 is:

1. Radio Control Inflatable Yoda (John Lewis)

2.

Skylanders (Game)

3. Radio Control Inflatable Minion (John Lewis) / Remote Control Spider (Tiger)

4. Radio Control Inflatable Darth Vader (John Lewis)

5.

Wooden Doll s House (John Lewis) / Space Hopper (Menkind)

6. Remote Control Car (Tiger)

7. Chad Valley Mega Vehicle Jump (Argos) / Shopkins Ice Cream Truck Set (John Lewis)

8.

Toy Waitrose Shopping Trolley (John Lewis) / Giant Piano Mat (John Lewis)

9. Micro Scooter (John Lewis)

10. Wooden Xylophone (John Lewis) / Electronic Dinosaur (John Lewis)

It was close at the top, but John Lewis radio control Inflatable Yoda took the top spot with 13% of the vote.

Standing at over two feet tall, the Jedi Master can move in any direction and makes 11 different sounds as he zooms about, lightsabre in hand.

The popularity of this toy came as no surprise with Star Wars fever in full swing ahead of the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens this December.

It is also a testament to how the legacy of Star Wars has passed through the generations, capturing imaginations since the 1970s and remaining popular year after year.

Toy Tester Usmaan was one of many to choose Yoda as his favourite, saying it was because: It was awesome and exciting!

Skylanders Superchargers on Xbox from Game was a close second, with 12% of the votes. Skylanders is a critically acclaimed game series where kids fly, drive and drive through Skylands in an unstoppable fleet of vehicles to stop Kaos and save the day!

The popularity of the Xbox game is unsurprising as the computer console generation grow, and Christmas lists fill with the latest instalments of popular computer generated interaction.

I loved buffing up the baddies! Said Toy Tester Emilio.

Mikey also loved the game, because he loved zooming about, it was so much fun!

Joint third place went to the John Lewis radio control Inflatable Minion Kevin and Remote Control Spider from Tiger, both scooping 10% of the votes.

Toy Tester Hollie was a big fan of Kevin, saying: It was fun and I can attack my Mum with it!

Tiger s remote control spider was a surprise hit; whilst parents ran in fear, the children of Peterborough were fascinated by its creeping, crawling legs and glowing red eyes.

Indeed, the fear factor seemed to be part of its popularity, as Tester Keyan Webb described: It was scary and that was funny!

In fourth place was the Jedi Master s Sith nemesis: the John Lewis radio control Inflatable Darth Vader. Standing tall at an impressive 68cm tall, his popularity also seemed to come from the fear factor, with his iconic mask, sweeping black cape and scary sound effects.

I chased my little sister! Said Toy Tester Aqsa who chose Darth Vader as his number one toy.

Lilly also loved Vader s sinister presence: It nearly made me wee!

To round off the top five, two classic toys jointly took the spot. Showing that sometimes the old ones are still the best, fifth place was taken by John Lewis Wooden Doll s House and Menkind s retro Space Hopper, complete with the iconic smiling face and bright orange colour.

Bethany Desborough chose the doll house above all others because it s very pink and girly. Lauren and Aiden both had a ball playing with the space hopper: It bounced very high!

they said, when selecting it as their top toy.

Overall, remote control toys won out as the favourite for the children of Peterborough, dominating the top of the list and providing hours of fun and entertainment for local little ones throughout the day. With the remote control toys all costing under 30, this is great news for bank balances over the Christmas period!

Mark Broadhead, Centre Director at Queensgate Shopping Centre, said: The toy testing event was a resounding success. There was a great atmosphere all day with big smiles all round.

I would like to thank all our Toy Testers for taking part and helping us discover the best toys on offer at Queensgate this Christmas!
