Guus Hiddink: Chelsea aiming to secure European qualification …

Guus Hiddink1 has admitted Chelsea2 now have a new target for this season: securing a place in next season’s Europa League3 through their exploits in the Premier League4.

The Blues secured a hardfought and nervy 2-1 victory away to Norwich on Tuesday night, which lifted the reigning league champions into eighth place in the standings, just four points behind sixth-placed West Ham, who play Tottenham on Wednesday.

With Manchester City winning the Capital One Cup on Sunday and looking likely to end the season in the top four spots, which would secure Champions League football for them in the process, the additional Europa League spot could go to the club finishing in sixth place this season.

Should Chelsea manage to maintain their good form – they remain unbeaten in 12 Premier League matches – they could feasibly achieve such an aim despite their poor start to the campaign.

And Hiddink admitted after Chelsea beat Norwich to lift themselves into the top half of the table for the first time since August, he wants his team to focus on securing European football for next season along with trying to win the FA Cup and go as far as possible in the Champions League.

“Now with the ambition of Chelsea we must set a new target and see what we can do in the direction of Europe,” Hiddink said.

“We have now won a few games in a row.

We have to keep on winning.

If everyone is on board and there are no big injuries, we’d like to go as high as possible towards the European spots.”

The victory at Carrow Road means Chelsea have won three Premier League games in a row for the first time since April 2015.”
