Come along and join in the fun: at The Friends of Dereham …

People living in the Dereham area have been invited to take part in a fun-packed afternoon of activities and entertainments while raising vital charity funds at the same time. The Friends of Dereham Hospital s bi-annual fete will take place on Saturday , June 21 2014 to raise money to further enhance the environment at the town s hospital, which is run by Norfolk Community Health and Care NHS Trust ( NCH&C ). The fete will be opened at 2pm by BBC weather presenter Julie Reinger , and will feature a range of attractions to keep people of all ages entertained, including music from Derrick and DOSYTCo, a classic car display and a wide variety of stalls, games and refreshments.

Money raised during the afternoon will be used by the Friends to purchase extra equipment for the hospital and items to make the time patients spend there more comfortable. Recent purchases have included pressure mattresses, furniture for the ward quiet room and a special bed for patients at risk of falling. Joanne Sebire, Chair of the Friends of Dereham Hospital , said: The hospital is vitally important for the people of Dereham and the surrounding areas, so we are keen to raise as much as we can at the fete to support its important work and make a difference to patients.

We ve arranged all sorts of different activities and entertainments during the afternoon, including traditional games, refreshments, a wide variety of stalls run by local charities and organisations, live music and a display by Busy Bodies Stage School. We hope that the fete will offer something for everyone and would encourage people to come along, have some fun and support their local hospital at the same time. Dereham Hospital provides general rehabilitation on its 24 bed Foxley Ward, along with a range of outpatient services, including leg ulcer clinics, pulmonary rehabilitation, musculoskeletal physiotherapy and speech and language therapy.

The Friends of Dereham Hospital are independent of the hospital, but play an important role in improving the environment for patients and staff. They also run a trolley shop for inpatients to make their admission more comfortable. We are extremely grateful for the support we receive from the Friends, said Andrew Pover, Ward Manager of the Foxley Ward , who will hold a stall at the fete to promote the work of NCH&C and explain more about the care the Trust offers across the county.

The money they generously raise for the hospital makes a real difference to patients and colleagues, and helps us to do that little bit more to make people s visit to hospital more comfortable. The fete takes place between 2pm and 4pm on the lawned area at the front of the hospital grounds, and everyone is welcome to attend. I could not believe it (cue Victor Meldrew voice !) when I heard a Xmas song being played on another radio station last Monday I mean, you grudgingly accept hearing those awful sickly sweet cheesy crimbo tunes in the shops from mid November at the latest as you can t exactly turn them off. But on the radio? NO!!!

I instantly made two executive decisions: 1) Any station heard playing Xmas songs from now on will be banned from airing in my house or car till at least January 1st (hope I don t have to ban Gateway!!!) 2) There will be absolutely no Xmas tunes on my show this December, not even Luther Vandross! I now have a nice big pile of CDs I ve not heard for a while to listen to whilst driving and am sure I will rediscover a few old favourite soul, jazz-funk & disco cuts to share with you on my show over the next month. So if you too need an escape from the OTT excesses of this dreadful time of year, make sure you listen in on Mondays at 7pm and Saturdays at 5pm for The Xmas Free Old Gits Soul Show!

Danish Royal Family Portrait Horrifying 0

Danish Royal Family Portrait Horrifying

This new portrait of the Danish royal family to celebrate the 150th anniversary of The House Gl cksburg is absolutely horrifying. The painting is by artist Thomas Kluge, and depicts Queen Margrethe II and her husband the Prince Consort Henrik seated on a couch, surrounded by their royal heirs. “The present and future monarchs, H.M. the Queen, T.R.H.

the Crown Prince and Prince Christian, all make eye contact with us, while their family members are portrayed in their own universe, unprovoked by the gaze of the spectator,” the Danish Royal Collections museum explains on its website 1 . “The children are at play with the exception of the upright and severe Prince Christian who seems aware of his future responsibilities.” “Severe” is right: The creepy portrait which took Kluge four years to paint and is “a kind of magic realism” references a painting from the 1880s by Laurits Tuxen that depicts the Danish royal couple with their international family: The new painting will be exhibited at the Danish Royal Collections at Rosenborg Castle with other royal portraits by the artist from November to March 2014, before it takes its permanent place in the residence of the royal couple at Fredensborg Palace. Of course, this is not the first royal portrait to draw ire in recent years: A similar controversy erupted over English painter Paul Emsley’s soft-focus oil painting of Kate Middleton in 2012. The first official portrait of the Duchess of Cambridge currently hangs in the National Portrait Gallery in London.
