The Royal Court, Sweden Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden has given birth to a Prince at Karolinska Hospital in Stockholm today (Wednesday 2nd March) at 20:28 weighing 3.6 kilos. Addressing the media in a press conference outside the hospital, Prince Daniel announced that Princess Victoria has delivered their son, and both mother and baby are well. Princess Estelle is sleeping, unaware of the news she has a new baby brother, and will be told tomorrow.
The new royal Prince is the second child for the Crown Princess and her husband, Prince Daniel. The baby boy is third in line in the succession to the throne of Sweden after his mother and his sister Princess Estelle. A 1980 change in law made his mother Crown Princess in favour of her younger brother Prince Carl Philip, who was born in 1979.
By then, changes in the law were already planned, though officially Prince Carl Philip was Crown Prince for eight months. The Crown Princess and her husband, Prince Daniel, also have a daughter named Princess Estelle who was born on 23 February 2012. She carries the title Duchess of sterg tland and is expected to succeed her mother as Queen regnant of Sweden when the time comes.
Princess Estelle s birth was greeted by two 21-gun salutes on Skeppsholmen island, which is opposite the Royal Palace in Stockholm. She was christened in the family s antique christening gown which was first worn by Prince Gustaf Adolf when he was christened in 1906. Her name and date of christening was added in embroidery to the gown.
The same is expected for this Prince. The name will be revealed when the King meets with the Cabinet. In Princess Estelle s case this was done the very next day.
A Te Deum thanksgiving service will be held in the Royal Chapel at Stockholm Palace.
The christening is expected to take place in about three or four months time at the Royal Chapel in Stockholm Palace and by then we will also know who his godparents will be.
