Electric car sales at record high in UK, figures show

Nissan s battery-powered Leaf was the first major car to be eligible for the government’s flagship grant scheme. Photograph: Simon Stuart-Miller for the Guardian Electric car sales in the UK jumped by 25% in Q3 to a record high, according to government figures. New registrations under the government’s 5,000 grant scheme were at 1,149, the highest number since it started in January 2011 and up 25% on Q2.

The news comes as a major player in the market, Renault 1 – Nissan 2 , admitted the company will miss its electric car target. Carlos Ghosn, chief executive of both Renault and Nissan, told the FT 3 that the car companies would miss their target of selling 1.5m electric vehicles between them by the end of 2016, and would be more likely to hit it in 2020 or 2021. But figures for Q3 show that 1,149 electric cars were registered under the flagship scheme, the highest number since it started in January 2011 4 and up 25% on Q2.

Data from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders puts the number slightly lower as not all manufacturers report to it and there is a lag in reporting but still at a record 978 electric cars in Q3, up from 936 in Q2. Nissan’s battery-powered Leaf was the first major car to be eligible for the flagship grant scheme, which was spared the axe under coalition austerity cuts, but has since had greater competition from new entrants such as the “range extender” Vauxhall Ampera 5 , the relatively cheap Renault Zoe 6 and, last week, the BMW i3 7 . An electric version of the world’s best-selling car, the Ford Focus, went on sale in September 8 and a new 55,000+ luxury electric car from US company Tesla will be delivered to UK buyers next spring 9 .

Ghosn said: “We will not be there on our 2016 target. At the speed right now, I’m seeing it more four or five years later.” He also said that a lack of charging points, which the government is funding, had hit sales. “We have to admit, it is slower than we thought. But it is slower for the reason that we thought infrastructure building would be faster.

It is not.” The Leaf, which is made at Nissan’s plant Sunderland, has been a hit in other markets, becoming the best-selling car in Norway for four months this year, driven in part by the country’s generous tax breaks for electric cars.

Elon Musk, Tesla’s CEO, recently told the Guardian 10 that electric cars had been hit by lobbying from the oil industry that was akin to the misinformation campaigns promoted by big tobacco companies, and said that governments were not offering big enough financial incentives to drive take-up of the cars.

Enegi Oil reveals next steps in ABT Technology's development …

() has revealed the next steps in the progression of its innovative production technology venture, with a new deal for part-owned ABT Oil & Gas. ABT Oil and Gas (ABTOG) has entered into an exclusive agreement with specialist engineer GMC in relation to buoyant oil platforms, which can host production systems and drilling equipment. This, Enegi says, is complementary to ABT s production buoy technology as the two solutions are able to have different operating envelopes .

The company adds that both technologies are scalable, re-deployable, and can be unmanned; as such they can both significantly reduce the capital and operational costs of an offshore oil and gas developments. Together the two technologies will be deployed to develop marginal offshore oil and gas projects which would, using traditional infrastructure, be deemed sub-economic. The platform technology will be commercially developed by ABTOG.

At the same time ABTOG has hired former Sea Dragon Offshore boss Stephen Baird as its new chief executive. ABTOG has also hired a commercial director and a business development director. “ABTOG’s market presence is increasing, Enegi chief executive Alan Minty said. Along with ABT, after considering both the size of the opportunity and the interest that we have had from the market, we decided that ABTOG should develop its own management team to prevent its growth from being checked.

We are delighted to have attracted someone of Stephen’s expertise to lead ABTOG. We believe that his experience of both the inner workings of oil and gas companies and the construction of large scale assets mean that he is ideally suited to the role.” Baird added: “I am delighted to have joined ABTOG. I have been particularly attracted by the uniqueness of the business model and the potential that it offers.

ABTOG’s ability to create significant value from assets which are believed to have limited value offers the potential for extraordinary returns. We are pleased to be partnering with GMC whose development solution increases the operating envelope of ABTOG’s solutions and provides significant savings over conventional development solutions. The addition of GMC’s platform solution is a direct response to the opportunities that we have identified and developed.

We look forward to working with GMC.”
