  • 19-year-old North Carolina man killed after being pulled into wood ... GASTONIA, NC ( WBTV 1 ) A North Carolina man was pulled into a wood chipper and killed over the weekend, police say. Officials believe 19-year-old Mason Scott Cox of Gastonia was attempting to kick a limb into the chipper when he got pulled in. The company, Crawford Tree Service out of Belmont, was cutting down trees in a yard.

The Department of Labor and Kings Mountain Police are investigating. They say the death was accidental and no foul play is believed to be involved. Cox was found inside the wood chipper and pronounced dead on scene, officials say.

Cox s family spoke to WBTV in an interview Monday morning. Cox s mother, Debra Sisk, said the teen had very limited experience in the tree removal industry, but had worked on cell towers before. She questions whether he was being supervised when the accident happened.

It was his first day on this job. He was trying to find work and he had been putting in applications, Sisk explained. She said she got the phone call about the accident Saturday afternoon and said it was horrifying to learn how her son had died.

I just started screaming when I found out how he died. It s bad enough that s he s gone, she said. Family members said they currently have no plans to contact the company Cox was working for.

They said they aren t angry over the incident, but they would like to know how the accident happened.

I loved him very much and I m going to miss him very much, said Cox s mother.

  • 2.4 million boost from the UK Commission for Employment and Skills A successful nationwide scheme which helps to improve the employability and academic achievement of young people is coming to thanks to a 2.4 million boost from the UK Commission for Employment and Skills (UKCES) announced by HRH the Prince of Wales earlier this year. This scheme, Business Class, creates long-term partnerships between leading businesses and schools in some of the UK s most deprived areas. The charity behind the scheme Business in the Community (one of HRH the Prince of Wales charities) is now calling for business and schools from across Cambridge, Fenland and Kings Lynn to join the programme and help to raise the aspirations of local young people.

Business Class is a unique collaborative model which enables clusters of businesses to bring their skills and expertise to support schools in a local area within structured three year partnerships. Over 230 secondary schools across the UK benefit from the scheme, supported by over 140 leading businesses. There are already several successful local clusters of work in Cambridge.

The UKCES funding will enable BITC to expand Business Class into 135 more partnerships across the UK. Business Class is an initiative of Business in the Community (BITC) that works together with some 850 member companies to raise awareness of responsible business and its transformational impact on communities, individuals and businesses, and encourage more businesses to tackle some of the most pressing social and environmental issues. Business in the Community believes that businesses have a huge role to play in equipping young people with the right skills, aspirations and motivation to succeed in education and the workplace and are urging businesses in Cambridge, Fenland and Kings Lynn to step forward and offer their support to local schools through Business Class.

The programme gives responsible businesses the opportunity to support head-teachers to achieve their strategic priorities, by providing business expertise, mentors and volunteers as well as inspirational experiences for pupils. This leads to accelerated school improvement and ensures that young people leave school with the skills they need to build successful working lives. Faye Ramsson, Education Campaign Director, Business in the Community said: Partnering with a school is one of the most effective ways that business can make a difference in their community so we hope business and schools will take this opportunity to form sustained partnerships.

Business Class makes a difference because it creates genuine long term partnerships which consider the needs of the whole school. Partner businesses work with schools in a variety of ways, from offering guidance on business planning and mentoring teachers to specific student support such as CV writing, interview skills, literacy and maths. She continued: There has been fantastic take-up of schools and business joining Business Class across the country and it s making a real difference, particularly around inspiring young people about the world of work and connecting them with opportunities to learn from potential employers and gain work experience.

We re excited to now be able to bring the scheme to this area and encourage all secondary schools and businesses to get involved.

Mark Cooper, from the Greater Cambridge Greater Peterborough Enterprise Partnership, said: I have witnessed the BITC enabled partnership between local business Dalehead Foods and Linton Village College, which showcases the benefits of improving the economic awareness of our young people, and been very impressed by the results.

I welcome any initiative that fits so well with our LEP Strategy for Skills and would encourage local businesses to engage with BITC wherever possible.

  • 2000 FIAT PUNTO 1.2 GOLD 8 valve good condition runs well Description Gold W reg 2000 1.2L 8 valve 78880 miles MOT till 14 jan 2016 I bought this as a nifty run-about earlier in the year while my Landrover was off the road. It s done its job now, so it s time to go. It s been a fun car to drive, nippy and handles well, done a few long journeys in it without problems.

Starts, idles and runs well, engine sounds good. The bodywork s good, it s clean and tidy inside, looks fine. Originally I thought I might keep it longer so I looked on the Punto forum for potential problems and I ve had some of the usual niggles fixed : power steering connections resoldered replacement coils and ECU treated some spots of surface rust under the bonnet Also two new tyres new mid-section of the exhaust including the flex bit All the little things work fine : radio, heating, rear window heater, City option on the power steering, wing mirror adjusters, headlamp height adjuster, clock, fog light, bulbs etc etc.

There are three minor things which I know about, but they ve never bothered me: seat belt warning light is on, but no annoying beep, I presume there s a microswitch needing attention slight weep from the rocker cover gasket (not the cylinder head, that s ok) a few tiny stone chips in the bonnet paintwork There are two door keys but only one ignition key (the replacement ECU only came with one). The friend of a friend I bought it from couldn t find the security card (it was his mother s car and he couldn t find it amongst her possessions) but it does have the manual and the radio code. It s only got 2-3 months left on the MOT, but my Landrovers need attention again so I need to concentrate on those, but with the tyres and exhaust replaced and some welding on the underside the last guy had done, I know of no reason why it should fail.

I bought it for 400 but it s done its job, I ve had my money s worth and I need the space, so I m happy to let it go for a lot less than I paid. You can use Paypal, or if you prefer cash on collection, I m happy with that too. • 28th March 2011 RNIB Digital TV, Sensory Support and Buses ... Description: An Eye with a lightning bolt slashed across it with a banner overlaid on yellow sand spreading to the blue sea in bright sunshine. Minutes of General Meeting Held on 28th March 2011 at 2:30pm At Wherry Way Communal Room, Caister Road, Great Yarmouth Before the meeting began, the Group was informed that the NHS fruit and vegetable van was at Wherry Way every Monday from 1pm, and that members were invited to purchase fresh produce and eggs at very reasonable prices before meetings. David Wilkinson chaired the meeting, which was attended by 23 members and guests.

Apologies had been received from Judy Morrow, Liz Price and John Kempster. Sarah Morris, Matron of the Ophthalmic Ward and JPH and Penny Leggett from Yare Care, had been expected to attend the meeting, but did not arrive. The minutes of the previous meeting were approved.

There had been a meeting the previous week with police. Members were informed that once they had initial contact with the police over any matter, they would agree a password to facilitate further communication. Tim reported that he had experience of this system and that it had worked well.

In response to a query from Linda, the Group were informed that individuals choose a password and inform the police what it is. It was suggested that the visit from the fire brigade be re-scheduled for a future meeting. Paul Bowerbank from the Sensory Support Unit expressed his thanks for the support of the group and individual members during the difficult past 6 months, during which the Unit was first threatened with closure and then had funding cut drastically.

The campaigns, letters and petitions had made a significant difference to the outcome, and whilst the level of support was going to be severely affected by funding cutbacks, the Unit was still able to run a restricted support service for Visually Impaired, Blind and Deaf people. He explained that the County Council had a legal requirement to provide certain services, but non-statutory services would no longer be provided, and there would be staff redundancies. At present the Unit had 5,000 pieces of equipment on permanent loan, and between 12 14,000 people had in the past received new services, repairs and replacements from the Unit who would now have to make their own arrangements.

The Unit would still give advice about where to obtain equipment. Paul was currently working on two options for the future of the Unit Option 1 ? that the Deaf Association might employ some staff to assess needs and sell equipment, and Option 2 ?

that the current service provided to the Deaf/Blind be retained and reviewed after 12 months. Clients would eventually be responsible for managing their own personal budgets. There was no capacity to further increase the service provided.

The budget for work with the deaf would not be verified until 5th April, but it had been proposed to retain a social worker for deaf people. Paul Bowerbank was qualified to carry out social work assessments and reassured members that critical needs will be met. With regard to the visual impairment side of the Sensory Support Unit, there were currently 5 full time rehabilitation officers, and it was hoped to retain 4 of them.

One had already succeeded in finding alternative employment and would not be replaced. Although it was not definite, it was hoped that the Unit would retain one Social Worker and one Social Work Assistant. This would depend on the outcome of a meeting with the Assistant Director to discuss ways of making cutbacks in the region of 56,000.

One duty worker post at the Sensory Support Unit had been cut, so it would not always be possible to contact the Unit directly. It was expected that in future all equipment other than mobility aids would have to be purchased by individuals, but Paul was willing to compile a list of people approved to carry out work adapting homes to meet the requirements of blind and visually impaired people. He would need to liaise with the NNAB about future replacement of existing replacement equipment, e.g.

white canes with balls on the end, as these would no longer be automatically available. Penny Cox questioned whether there would in future be a longer wait for new clients to be assessed. At present there are two teams of social workers/ rehabilitation workers who receive referrals from the Queen Elizabeth Hospital at King?s Lynn, James Paget and the Norfolk & Norwich, who are responsible for ensuring that legal requirements are met and that advice was provided to clients about other sources of advice and support, but this level of support was not likely to continue.

Liz Kitchener asked whether the Sensory Support Unit had a backlog of unused stock which the NNAB could take over, but Paul was unable to make any commitment at this stage about the disposal of equipment held by the Sensory Support Unit as this was the property of Norfolk County Council. As an employee of Norfolk County Council he was not at liberty to make decisions of that nature, nor had he followed up an approach from ITV to appear in a feature involving the Norfolk Coalition of Disabled People which Siobhan had also been contacted about. Paul was thanked for contributing to the meeting and updating members of the current situation with the Sensory Support Unit.

David then welcomed Peter Atkin from the RNIB who had been invited to talk to the group about the changeover to Digital television. The changeover to Digital television in Norfolk would take place in two stages, on 9th and 23rd November, when all analogue reception would disappear. The change would mean a fairer deal in that everyone would have access to channels currently available only to those with a Freeview box or television with built-in Freeview, and there would be better quality reception, both in sound and picture quality, and better access to audio description.

There are 4 different ways to go digital ? with existing equipment which is Sky satellite based, through a Freeview box, via Cable and via Freesat which is a BBC/ITV initiative similar to Sky but with no monthly payments, and restricted to 12 English channels. To qualify for access to the Helpscheme, it is necessary to meet one of the following criteria 1.

be over 75 2. be in receipt of Attendance Allowance, DLA, Income Support or Pension Credits 3. be Registered blind or partially sighted.

There was a 40 subsidy, and an engineer would check the aerial for digital signal, set up a Freeview box, and show how to use the handset. A customer helpline would be available 24/7 and work would be guaranteed for 18 months. Existing Sky, Cable and Freesat networks are already digital-ready, and existing Freeview boxes will need to be re-tuned.

Peter then demonstrated the difference audio description made to a brief extract from an episode of Eastenders, which was very interesting and informative. He said that in the first week of any new film, Odeon cinemas included audio description, and that the RNIB was pushing for Museums, Art Galleries and major sporting venues to offer audio description. In answer to a question about digital radio, Peter said that it was the government rather than the BBC which was delaying a switchover, but it will take at least two years.

The present quality of digital radio is very variable. Peter had brought copies of a helpful and well-produced booklet about the changeover to Digital TV in different formats for members to take away. Peter was thanked for his entertaining and informative talk.

Chris Maule-Oatway from NNAB spoke about the unexpected and sudden introduction of further restrictions for use of senior citizen and disabled persons? bus passes, which were mainly reduced hours for travelling free of charge, and the withdrawal of free passes for sighted companions. The public consultation had not been well publicized and was undertaken mainly by phone calls and via the internet.

Chris said that he had completed an emailed questionnaire as an individual pass holder, not as an NNAB representative. A Scrutiny Panel had been asked to look at the case for withdrawing the new restrictions to the times pass holders were allowed to use their passes, and Chris suggested that members write to local councillors and the MP to explain the hardship the restriction causes, and keeping any bus tickets purchased outside of the time the pass was valid. This was a cost-cutting exercise undertaken by Norfolk County Council, and only a relatively small number of blind people were involved, though the impact the change would make on them was potentially a big issue, for example in terms of getting to college on time, being able to undertake voluntary work and going to shops before they got busy.

The new restrictions were not being enforced by all bus companies. David agreed to include a list of names councillors? names with the minutes.

Chris was thanked for attending the meeting and keeping members informed. Ian Hardy encouraged members to sign up for one of the visits to Great Yarmouth Potteries with Liz or Wendy. Members should make their own way there.

In terms of local government cutbacks, Ian said that Great Yarmouth Borough Council was revising its own management structure, and that cutting back of some services would be essential. He encouraged the VIP User Group members to keep themselves well informed, research well as they usually do, get hold of the facts and ask pertinent questions. The Group agreed to send an official letter to the Chief Executive of the Borough Council, and members were encouraged to make individual representations about ways in which cutbacks would affect them personally.

Under the terms of the Freedom of Information Act, people could expect to be dealt with respectfully and have their issues and concerns addressed sympathetically. Members had met with the MP about the King Street crossing hazard, and he may try to lobby to have it sorted out. Penny would invite Sarah Morris to the July meeting to feedback on developments since her previous visit to the group.

Chris Stanley from the Lions Club would be bringing his ?silent? electric car for members to listen to. On 11th May there would be a demonstration in London about rights for people with disabilities which Penny encouraged members to take part in.

Trains would be going from Norwich. The Craft Club was meeting each Friday, doing basket work, coffee morning at Hall Quay each 2nd Friday, Book Club at the Library on the last Friday of each month, and Sailing would begin on Tuesdays in May. The consultation at Christchurch about changes to DLA was attended by 86 people, and the VIP Group was well represented.

The RNIB was launching a national campaign to remove cars and obstructions off pavements. Penny would keep the meeting informed about this. George raised a question about the possibility of a bus shelter being provided at Prince of Wales?

Road at Caister. There was some confusion about who was responsible for provision of bus shelters, but it was suggested that he should contact a member of his Parish Council in the first instance. There had been no reply from the Council to letters about the provision of more pedestrian crossings in Gorleston.

Concern was expressed about the lack of safe crossing places between Middleton Road and Bridge Road, and from Links Road to the seafront. • 4th Impact ringing in the New Year with a gig at The Viaduct ... There s yet more exciting news about what s ahead for X Factor stars 4th Impact today as it s been revealed that they will be ringing in the New Year with a gig at fabulous Leeds nightspot, The Viaduct Showbar 1 . This slideshow requires JavaScript. We heard the news via 4th Impact fans on Twitter and thank you all for sharing such info with us by the way, it s truly appreciated and a look at Viaduct s Facebook page 2 confirms the news of the gig.

The confirmation reads, SPECIAL GUEST STARS X FACTORS 4TH IMPACT! PERFORMING LIVE ON OUR STAGE & COUNTING US DOWN INTO 2016! The 4th Impact girls who are of course sisters Irene, Celina, Almira and Mylene haven t as yet posted any information about the gig to their own Twitter account, but we ll be keeping our eyes peeled for when and if they do!

Meanwhile, another 4th Impact fan shared an interesting tweet with us earlier too 4I fan @trinidad_jet on Twitter pointed out that the girls have been invited to perform at the Far East Festival, whose profile on Twitter reads, An Open Air Festival coming soon to London a place to celebrate, discover, and explore the wonders of all things Far East! #FarEastFest The account tweeted to 4th Impact, writing, Hi girls! Congrats on your success on The X Factor We would like to book 4th Impact for an Event, could you help please? But as if all of that wasn t exciting enough, 4th Impact fans are also staging their own campaign on the girls behalf with the Twitter hash tag #LIKE4THIMPACT200K.

The level of support that 4th Impact have is really quite astounding, and as we ve mentioned before, we haven t seen the like of it since One Direction first shot to fame during and after their time on X Factor And we only need to see how incredibly well which is the understatement of the year they ve done to take a guess at what the future holds for 4th Impact.

We can t wait to see how it all unfolds for them!

  • 4th Impact set for ANOTHER huge gig!

This is their future ... Since they were eliminated from The X Factor a couple of weeks ago, 4th Impact sisters Celina, Irene, Almira and Irene have been busier than one-armed wallpaper hangers They ve already topped the billing at Round House, G.A.Y. 1 and The Clothes Show 2 , and now they ve announced that they re set to perform live at The Coconut Club in Hertfordshire. That will take place on December 20th which Forum Hertfordshire announced via Twitter, writing, SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT!! X Factor finalist @4thImpactMusic HERE 20th Dec!

The account later added, We are happy to announce @xfactor finalist @4thimpactmusic will be performing LIVE at our under 18s night #cococlubherts And with that message, the account added the image below to their Instagram page, prompting the 4th Impact girls to reply, Excited to see you guys @theforumherts Coconut club Grab your tickets now. If you re lucky enough to be in the area on December 20th, then you can grab your tickets by clicking here 3 . But for those of us who can t attend, we can take consolation in knowing that in future, 4th Impact WILL be touring the world, and we have no doubt they will sell-out every venue they play live at Because while their gigs in the last couple of weeks have given the girls yet more exposure and raised their public profile even further, there can be no question that in time, they will be filling arenas and stadiums around the globe, just like One Direction do.

We ve said it before but it s worth saying again; we haven t seen a response to X Factor finalists like this since One Direction, and in short, the reaction of fans around the world to 4th Impact has been simply phenomenal. This slideshow requires JavaScript. It s extraordinary how the girls have captured the attention and hearts of music lovers around the globe, and X Factor boss Simon Cowell will be fully aware of that, so we would guess that he s going to fast-track these girls just like he did with 1D.

Their debut single, What Makes You Beautiful, set them on the path to where they are now, which is becoming global superstars and household names, selling-out every venue they perform at, producing one hit album after another, and going to No1 with (nearly) every single they ever release.

Stand by Dreamers, this all coming very soon!

  • 6 Reasons to Welcome Refugees after Paris After the attacks on Paris, many politicians including (so far) the governors of Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, Michigan, and Texas 1 have called for stopping refugee flows to the United States from the Middle East, claiming that the refugee process poses a major threat to America s security. Here are six reasons why ending US refugee resettlement is a mistaken and reactionary approach: The Paris attackers were not refugees. Assuming that the user of a fake Syrian passport found near the body of an attacker belonged to the attacker, which isn t clear 2 , he exploited the flow of people into Europe, but he was not a refugee.

He did not receive refugee designation from the United Nations or vetting from intelligence agencies. He was never approved 3 for refugee status in any country. To become a refugee in the United States, you undergo a multi-stage vetting process 4 and only after receiving UN designation by trained officers in the field.

The United States can vet refugees prior to admission , which means we can weed out terrorists and those most likely to become involved in terrorism, accepting only the most vulnerable. Europe cannot do the same. What happened in Paris is not applicable to the US refugee process.

US refugees don t become terrorists. The history of the US refugee program demonstrates that the lengthy and extensive vetting that all refugees must undergo is an effective deterrent for terrorists. Since 1980, the United States has invited in millions of refugees, including hundreds of thousands from the Middle East.

Not one 5 has committed 6 an act of terrorism in the United States. Traditional law enforcement and security screening processes have a proven record of handling the threat from terrorist posing as refugees. Other migration channels are easier to exploit than the refugee process .

The previous point can also be made another way. Non-refugees have carried out 7 all foreign terrorist attacks over the past 35 years. That means they used other means to arrive in the United States.

All of the 9/11 hijackers used student or tourist visas. These visas are much easier and faster to obtain than refugee status, which takes up to two years and requires a multi-stage vetting process and UN referral. Refugee status is the single most difficult way to come to the United States.

It makes no sense for a terrorist to try to use the resettlement process for an attack. ISIS sees Syrian refugees as traitors . According to ISIS, Syrian Muslim refugees are traitors 8 to the radical Islamic cause.

It is correct for Muslims to leave the lands of the infidel for the lands of Islam, but not vice versa, one ISIS video 9 said in September. Here 10 are several other examples of similar condemnation from this year. Nearly 90 percent 11 of displaced Syrians in Turkey have no sympathy for ISIS at all , even though ISIS is fighting the person who most refugees see as their main enemy 12 : Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad.

Kurdish 13 and Christian 14 refugees see ISIS as their main threat. Some have speculated 15 that the attacker in Paris intentionally left the fake Syrian passport near his body to help turn the West against Syrian refugees. Turning away Syrian refugees plays into ISIS s hands.

Turning away allies will make us less safe . Callous disregard for the fate of refugees our potential allies in the war against ISIS will drive them back into the hands of the person they are fleeing: Bashar al-Assad, the hated Syrian dictator. This will lead some refugees to see ISIS as their only remaining ally and safeguard against Assad.

The evidence in the academic literature 16 is that keeping refugees penned-up in camps near the zone of conflict increases terrorism in those areas, but resettling them outside of those areas does not. During the Cold War, we used refugee resettlement to gain foreign policy assets, spies, allies, and spokesmen to refute the enemy s propaganda. In the fight against ISIS, allies gained from aiding refugees will be as important as any weapon we have.

America should demonstrate moral courage . During World War II, the United States turned away Jews due to security concerns. We sent shiploads back to the camps because we were scared that Nazi spies could hide in their midst which was not an entirely unfounded concern.

The lesson of the Holocaust 17 is that we must deal with threats without rejecting our ethical obligations. We must not send those fleeing persecution back to their persecutors. The definition of moral courage is to refuse to allow fear to overwhelm our humanity.

The Tsarnaev brothers, who attacked the Boston Marathon in 2013, were not refugees 18 : they were children of an ayslee. In 2002, they were brought to United States by their father, at ages 8 and 15, on a tourist visa 19 . After entering the US, their father applied for asylum, which is a different and distinct process from overseas refugee vetting 20 .

His children received derivative status 21 , allowing them to stay with him, but they did not go through either the asylum or refugee process themselves. (There is no indication, then or now, that their father was ever involved with terrorism.) Read more here 22 .

  • A Religion for Aryans By Professor Revilo P. Oliver Many believe that, as is quite possible, a large population of mediocrities requires the spiritual sustenance of a religion that promises survival after death as a compensation for the inevitable disappointments and sorrows of human life. If that is so, a replacement must be found for the demoralizing cult of the Jew-god that has, for fifteen centuries, blighted our race and sapped its vital instincts.

And if the substitute religion is not to impair our race s vitality, it must be in harmony with the Aryan psyche. An attempt to design and launch such a religion is being made by a group who call themselves Reincarnation, Incorporated, with perhaps a gentle pun in the title. Their initial promotion is a forty-page tabloid paper, oddly but cleverly entitled What Is , of which seventy thousand copies are said to have been distributed from the new Delphi (P.O.Box 3009, Agoura Hills, California).

A second printing of the same quantity is in prospect to recruit more New Age Activists, as members of the cult like to call themselves. The obvious basis for an Aryan religion is the doctrine of metempsychosis, which is congenial to our racial psyche and was a faith held wherever our race established its superiority, from India to Scandinavia. It reappears, with only a little modification, in Schopenhauer s doctrine of the palingenesis of the will. 1 It is foreign to all the Semitic religions, and appears among Mongolians only under the influence of Buddhism, which was exported from India to China.

Belief in the transmigration of souls is not inherently unreasonable. It is untainted by the trumpery revelations and preposterously childish tales of the Jewish concoction called Christianity. Since souls are, by definition, invisible and impalpable, one cannot prove that they do not exist and do not act as a catalyst, so to speak, in initiating and maintaining the chemical and bio-electrical reaction called life.

And if souls exist as a kind of subtle energy, the transfer of the undetectable spark from one organism to another would conform to a psychic law of the conservation of energy, and one could, of course, give the doctrine a now fashionable embroidery by discoursing on analogies with quantum mechanics. A soul thus conceived could be the real personality of an individual, and not entirely irrational explanations can be found for an incarnate soul s inability to remember its previous incarnations. Unlike other religions, a faith in metempsychosis need involve nothing that is demonstrably false.

The doctrine of metempsychosis was brought to its fullest and most logical form by the Aryans of India, who perfected it by combining with it the concept of karma ( karman ). 2 This produces a grandiose system of psychic evolution that neatly parallels the scientific fact of biological evolution. The individual soul is presumed to have begun with the lowest and simplest form of organic life and to have developed itself, through its experiences and actions in each incarnation, ascending gradually to ever higher forms of life and eventually to the higher mammals, who become capable of conscious moral activity. By the time that we become human beings (perhaps even before), the moral quality of an individual s actions automatically determine, by an unalterable natural law, his social status and his fate (i.e., what happens to him, as distinct from what he does voluntarily) in his next incarnation.

If he discharges faithfully his moral obligations in the status in which he is born, he will have a higher (and morally more demanding) status in his next life; if, on the other hand, he violates the morality of the natural law, he will revert to a lower social status and suffer in it condign tribulations, or, if his guilt exceeds such demotion, he reverts to a subhuman mammal and has to progress to human form once more. This is, of course, a rational religion. Karma is governed by a natural law inherent, like gravitation, in the structure of the universe.

There is no need for a theodicy, the intellectual reef on which all monotheist religions are wrecked. There is no need for a creator of an eternal universe and no function for a god who intervenes in human affairs. One of the six orthodox religious philosophies of India, the Nirisvara-Samkhya , is frankly atheistic in the sense that it excludes a creating or governing god, although it does admit higher forms of life to which humans may evolve and thus become beings that are superhuman, just as we are supersimian.

If you must have a god, the alternate ( Sesvara ) system will give you one who is like the god in Plato s Politicus: he designed and fashioned the perfect mechanism of the universe and, after setting it in motion, left it to function automatically, giving no further attention to it and its inhabitants. Only fools would try to attract his attention by performing childish rites or whimpering prayers, but by the moral law of the universe austerities and self-mortification automatically (and regardless of an individual s intent in performing them) release the cosmic energy of tapas and thus confer psychic powers that may be exerted in this or in subsequent lives. You will have seen that this is also a socially perfect religion.

However disagreeable may be your present status in life and however great may be the injustice and suffering that you must endure, you are thus expiating your moral errors in a preceding life, while your fortitude in accepting without protest the consequences of your past immorality automatically generates the moral quality that will raise you to a higher status in your next life. The doctrine even reconciles the races: a nigger is assured that by good conduct he can ascend racially and eventually be born an Aryan. 3 A society that fully accepts the belief in karma is one in which discontent, social agitation, political conflict, and revolutions are all impossible. Such is the perfectly logical and coherent religion that the Aryans in India fashioned from the religion of the Rg-veda that was theirs when they invaded that sub-continent and which they never formally repudiated, despite the implications of the doctrine I set forth above. 4 The older religion and its analogues naturally dominated the great literature in Sanskrit.

All belief in hyper-physical phenomena was, for a time, challenged by the strictly rational and materialistic (i.e., scientific) conception of the universe and life called Lokayata . 5 The religious conceptions of India were profoundly perturbed and altered by the disastrous and egalitarian heresy called Buddhism, a religion that had been fashioned from gross perversion of the austere and profoundly pessimistic philosophy of Gautama. And the common people, increasingly mongrelized by miscegenation in defiance of the Aryan Laws of Manu, while never doubting metempsychosis, sought to evade natural law by magic, that is, by invoking the intervention of a god (e.g., Krishna) or goddess (e.g, Kali) whom they pleased and flattered by sacrifices and other acts of special devotion. It would be pointless to mention here the wild variety of grotesque sects, each with its gang of holy men intent on exploiting the superstitions of the populace, that flourish in modern India, but it may be relevant to give a glimpse of the corruption of the old Aryan conception of reincarnation and karma among the most highly cultivated Hindus of the age that followed the rise of Buddhism in India.

A good example is one of the great works of Sanskrit literature, the Kadambari of Bana (completed after his death, c. A.D.

650, by his less talented son). It is written in the ornate and alembicated prose that is esteemed as more poetic than verse a mannered and artificial style that reminds one of Euphuism, but paradoxically also reminds one of the German style of Kant, for, given the incomparable lexical and syntactical suppleness of Sanskrit, it can be said of Bana, as it was of Kant, that he often dives into a sentence and comes up, several pages later, with the verb in his mouth.

The Kadambari is a work that was accessible only to the most highly cultivated readers. 6 The story opens at the court of a famous king and dramatist, Sudraka, whose very name shows that he was not a true Aryan. (He cannot have been a Sudra, but he probably was a hybrid like Dumas, his father s Aryan blood mingled with that of a woman of lower race.) To him comes a Candala, a maiden of wondrous beauty, although she belongs to the very lowest and most despised caste. 7 (Don t worry: you will eventually discover she is the goddess Lakshmi in disguise.) She presents to the king a learned and eloquent parrot, who, after composing verses in the king s honor, narrates a long and intricate romance, inset with subordinate stories, which is the body of the work but need not be outlined here. The wise parrot s discourse causes the veil of ignorance to fall from before the king s eyes, and he learns of his earlier incarnations on earth and, at the behest of the disguised Lakshmi before she ascends to heaven, he dies and eventually discovers that he is really Lord of the Night, Regent of the Moon. His terrestrial sufferings have atoned for the moral lapse that brought upon him the curse that sent him to earth, so he rejoins his favorite wife and wins Kadambari, the maiden whom he especially loves and long desired in vain.

The three thereafter dwell in his lunar orb, together with their friends and associates, but from time to time revisit the two terrestrial kingdoms that belong to them. You will not need to be shown how drastically this story departs from the basic simplicity and rationality of the Aryan doctrine of karma that I outlined above. I have mentioned it expressly to show how the pure doctrine of karma can survive contamination by notions of deities who intervene in earthly affairs, incarnate divinities, and even the mystical efficacy of curses. 8 That should make us cautious in criticizing modern adaptations of the doctrine that are designed for popularity today.

The concept of a transmigration of souls is, as I have said, native to our race. It reappeared frequently in the literature of the Nineteenth Century (e.g., in two of Edgar Allen Poe s most memorable short stories or Theophile Gautier s Avatar ). Langdon Smith spontaneously saw the parallel between metempsychosis and biological evolution in his one well-known poem, When you were a tadpole and I was a fish, In the Paleozoic time.

In our century, the concept has been popularized by the memories of Bridey Murphy, Joan Grant, Taylor Caldwell (Mrs. Marcus Reback), and others. The doctrine, furthermore, is susceptible of a kind of proof.

Most literate persons read in their youth vivid tales set in ancient or transcendentally exotic cultures, such as Ryder Haggard s She , Flaubert s Salammbo , Georg Ebers Der Kaiser , Merejkowski s Tutenchamon auf Kreta , Maseras Ildaribal , Pierre Louys Aphrodite , or any of a hundred others. Such stories, set in a panorama of a vanished civilization, make a deep impression on the minds of youthful readers, but fade from the conscious mind in subsequent decades. As the readers, especially if they are female, approach or enter middle age, their youthful impressions can be recalled in hypnosis; they may spontaneously mistake them for memories of a past incarnation, and they will almost certainly do so, if they have been prepared for a past life regression by a skilled hypnotist.

There should, therefore, be a large and active market for a new religion based on metempsychosis and karma, now that Mme. Blavatsky s Theosophy is quite worn out. It is not easy, however, to estimate the potential of Reincarnation, Incorporated.

The forty pages of its tabloid, half of them written by one man, are chiefly devoted to glowing descriptions of how wonderful it is to be a New Age Activist, and they have comparatively little to say about a specific metaphysical doctrine. One principal theme is a vehement but entirely justified polemic against the Jesus-jerks of the Moral Majority and New Christian Right, who are so lavishly promoted by the Jews boob-tubes and have already excited such mindless fanaticism that one of the chief hokum-peddlers has set himself up as a candidate for the Presidency, and the Revolutionary Tribunal in Washington has shown ominous signs of coming to a working agreement with the crude communism of early Judaeo-Christian cults. One can only applaud the polemic, which gives the new religion a present utility.

The bits of doctrine that one can gather from obiter dicta scattered through the forty pages indicate that the basic doctrines of karma have been incorporated in an odd mishmash. The sect teaches acceptance of the world as it is, and that is good, but then we encounter a blob of Christian sentimentality in the strange affirmation that the Law of Grace supersedes the Law of Karma All your positive and loving thoughts and actions go to cancel out your stored-up bad karma. Now this directly contravenes the basic doctrine, according to which sentiments and thoughts have no effect in themselves, and actions are all that count.

The word karman means an act, deed, and is in some writings taken as an antithesis to belief and the kind of thought that does not result in physical action. Thus karmanurupa may designate what is in accord with a constant action or function, such as a chemical reaction, as well as the conduct and fate of a man that are in accord with his actions in a previous life. It is the latter conception, of course, that is fundamental to the religio-philosophical doctrine that takes its name from karman .

Then we are told everyone is here on earth to fulfill their sic dharma and to resolve their karma by rising above fear and learning to express unconditional love. I am not sure what this means. Dharma is duty, propriety, justice, and hence the prescribed conduct of a man (or woman) in the social status and position to which he (or she) has been born.

Fulfilling those obligations faithfully advances one spiritually; violation of that duty will result in rebirth in a lower and more unpleasant status. It is the dharma of a slave to serve his master loyally; the dharma of a soldier, to slay the enemies of his king; and the * dharma of a king (as is so clearly stated in the famous Arthasastra ), to be merciless toward criminals and subversives, and to root them out, even by using a corps of agents provocateurs. There isn t a word about bubbling with love, conditional or unconditional.

The New Age Activists, we are told, will be an army of people armed with love and they will replace repression and fear with peace and light. So we end with more of the old buncombe. Such pie may be served in the sky, but it will never be found on earth, and it is a great disservice to arouse an appetite for an imaginary confection.

I suppose this nonsense was put in to stimulate the glands of compulsive do-gooders. I refrain from commenting on the two-page spiel by a certain Joseph Goldstein, who twice assures us that Sexual misconduct can most easily be understood as refraining ! from those actions of sensuality which cause pain and harm to others. If he means what he says, he should laud the famous Marquis de Sade, who was most emphatically not guilty of such misconduct.

What is most disturbing is that Reincarnation, Incorporated, carries with it a whole passel of fakirs and mystery-mongers, all eager to perform magic if you cross their palms with silver. One female will bang a Tibetan gong (probably made in Brooklyn) to help you remember your past lives in Tibet and to facilitate the rising of the Kundalini. I forbear asking about her qualifications, but in my quite limited reading in the sources, if memory does not deceive me, it was implied that only males have a kundalini , a cute psychic snake that issues from the sexual organs, climbs up the spine, and enters the brain to fill it with transcendence.

There are psychics who will read your destiny from tea leaves, from quartz crystals (giving you crystal energetics ), from the palms of your hands, just as they used to do in the tents of the old carnivals. International authorities will teach you how to raise your vibrational level and will introduce you to spirit guides, just waiting to act as your unseen (but not unpaid) cicerone and show you the sights of spookland; how to have fun in trances, even if you don t know what you are doing; how to work up enough psychic ability to remember at least three of your past lives; and how to get such a big dose of awareness that you will be attuned to the awesome power that guides the universe and make love s psychic dimensions work for you. Top parapsychologists will teach you how to have extra-sensory perception and nurture your ESP ability, to the astonishment of your friends. (That should be lots of fun, but my guess is that any card-shark could teach you more about stacking a deck of cards and would do it for less.) And to complete the show, there are astrologers all over the lot, and all of them have got computers now and can tell you with scientific accuracy just what the planets, including Pluto and, I suppose, the larger asteroids, such as Vesta, Ceres, and Pallas, are going to do to you tomorrow.

One wizard, who has the same address as Reincarnation, Incorporated, will, for only $16.00, jiggle his IBM System 36 computer for you and give you a print-out to bring energy to each part of your personality and, you know, a big computer like that just couldn t make a mistake. Now I am sure that some prospective customers will be repelled by some or all of those side-shows and turn away from the main tent, and others will be displeased by the somewhat inept collocation on page 9 of the liberal leadership, New Age practitioners, homosexuals (estimated at over 40 million) as three groups, presumably equally precious, who will be run into Nazi death camps, if the awful Fascists get control after the impending collapse of this ruined and bankrupt country. What I do not profess to know is what percentage of potential customers will be alienated by such ingredients in the mishmash.

The potentiality of Reincarnation, Incorporated, furthermore, is delimited by the fact that if a new religion is to attract multitudes, it must exhibit a great novelty and seem to be radically new. It must differ drastically from all religions in vogue when it is introduced. The new cult, however, offers only crambe repetita , warmed-over cabbage.

The chatter about love and higher consciousness and transcendental values that Theosophy peddled in its hey-day, when such figments of the imagination differed attractively from the dreary quibbles of Christian theology, are now stale and tedious; they are offered today by a hundred competing sects and with only slight variations. To give a specific example: What does Reincarnation, Incorporated, offer that is not also offered by the Stelle Group, which I mentioned obiter in Liberty Bell , August 1984, p.

13? The differences are only in the trimmings of the worn-out garments.

If a new religion based on metempsychosis and karma is to command wide adherence, it must offer some doctrine that is not now tediously familiar to everyone who has gone shopping in the salvation-marts. In sum, then, I am inclined to believe that the new religion is perhaps fatally flawed as it comes from its makers, and I should suppose that it has little chance of becoming more than just another weird cult for people who want to believe whatever is incredible. But when I remember the jumble of inconsistent and even antithetical ideas in all of the most popular cults in India, of which the best is illustrated by the Kadambari , I prudently refrain from categorical predictions about what Weishaupt s marvellous mind of man cannot be made to believe.

Footnotes 1. Schopenhauer drew inspiration for much of his philosophy from the fifty Upanisads that he read in the Latin translation by Anquetil Duperron (Strassburg, 2 vols., 1801-1802), of which he said ( Parerga , II, 185), It has been the most elevating reading which (with the exception of the original text) there can possibly be in the world. It has been the solace of my life, and will be of my death. ) 2.

When one cites Sanskrit nouns and adjectives, one does not give the nominative singular, as in Greek and Latin, but the special base, or pausa, form that is used in dictionaries and in grammatical treatises, from which the inflected cases are derived.) 3. The stages of transition from the Vedas to the doctrine of the later Upanisads is obscure, but one conjecture, drawn from the term dvija ( born again ), applied only to Aryans, is that originally only Aryans were thought capable of reincarnation, while black-skinned Dravidians and apes were thought to perish like all other lower mammals. That was a biologically wholesome attitude, and an historian may regret that it was superseded by formulation of the complete scheme of spiritual evolution called karma.

By another conjecture, one regarding the origin of the caste system, one can suppose that the civilized white race that preceded the Aryans in the Indus Valley was included among the born again.

    4. I have given a concise, perhaps too concise, summary of Hindu religions and religious philosophies in Appendices A, B, and C to my translation of the Mrcchakatika (Little Clay Cart) ; cf. Appendices D, E, and L.

The essentials can be learned from any good reference work.) 5. In a very early article, written with Spenglerian fatalism, I wrote: We need not be astonished that Hindu skepticism enjoyed only a relatively brief existence: no malism was ever more than transitory, for in philosophy, as in daily life, men are naturally cowards and optimists. Skepsis always consumes itself; it is a brilliant flame that, like a magnesium flare, bursts forth for a moment in the tenebrous night, and then vanishes, leaving the darkness more impenetrable than ever.

According to Spengler, gerontic civilizations enter a period of second religiosity before they die; we may now have reached that stage. Other and perhaps better explanations are possible, such as the observed decline of the level of intelligence in proletarian and multiracial societies, or the necessary effect of a civilization that contravenes the innate instincts of our species. (I am thinking of an extremely important article by Alan McGregor that will appear in a coming issue of the Mankind Quarterly; I plan to consider it in connection with the phenomena of sexual perversion.) 6. If you have sufficiently mastered Sanskrit to read the Mahabharata or the Kathasaritsagara without difficulty, you will find that reading Bana is like breaking trail in three feet of snow.

There is an English translation by C. M,20. Ridding (1906), which I have not seen.

Aside from the inimitably ornate and poetic diction, Bana s work has a considerable charm in its sensitivity to the beauties of nature, but the late Arthur Berriedale Keith, the foremost authority on Sanskrit literature, was certainly right in saying that it will seem fantastic, uninteresting, and tedious to readers who have no settled belief in metempsychosis.

    7. The offspring of a white woman of the highest primary caste by a brown-skinned male of the lowest is the result of miscegenation so monstrous that he (or she) is particularly accursed. The descendants of such persons are Candalas; they are legally dead and must carry rattles to warn of their approach so that decent persons can avoid the loathesome sight.

They serve as executioners and porters of corpses, since they cannot be more polluted than they are by birth. They are, however, morally superior to Englishmen and Americans, who commit the heinous crime of eating beef and will therefore be reborn as pigs or worse.

    8. The parrot is an estimable young man who was reborn as a parrot because he was cursed, not by a holy man as is so common in Hindu story, but only by a maiden whom he had wearied with protestations of love.

  • A Respectable Tom: War and the Thanksgiving Holiday Forget the tropes on Pilgims and Indians, the American Thanksgiving you know is written in the military history of the nation. During the War for Independence, with America as yet fully defined, there were several thanksgiving celebrations called by Congress that were ad hoc and not at all related to one another. They were, furthermore, the legacy of the European celebrations, and often based in religion rather than anything particularly American.

By the Civil War, the war that was the ultimate test of the political entity s survival, the moment had arrived to codify the as yet relatively informal celebrations into a national holiday. In the wake of the victory at Gettysburg, President Lincoln finally yielded to Sarah Hale s perennial call for the institutionalization of the Thanksgiving holiday. One negative result of the holiday s Civil War roots was that into the 20 th Century the holiday would chafe the former Confederate States.

Nevertheless, as the United States came into its own as a world power in the 20 th Century, not only a holiday but an iconic menu and setting was created via Norman Rockwell s Freedom From Want painting. Depicting a roast turkey for dinner and the extended family around the table, while this image might not literally replicate the Thanksgiving experience of every American, it represented an ideal that could serve as a touchstone for any American, and as a blueprint for what the military authorities could provide to the troops so as to signify the holiday. This menu component of the holiday is one of its critical features.

According to Priscilla Ferguson s arguments Thanksgiving has become the most significant symbol of culinary unity in the American melting pot. She argues that the diverse traditions that have combined to create the American menu means that there is no singular American gastronomic culture to which all can relate. While her argument in favor of Thanksgiving notes its importance as an event, and that individual Thanksgiving meals can vary according to region and ethnic background, a persuasive argument can be made that by the 20 th Century a singular, iconic menu emerged that is recognized by any American as the Thanksgiving dinner.

This may not be the meal that any particular individual may enjoy; however, if on Thanksgiving that meal is served it will be enjoyed as such. And, as mentioned previously, the ability to have recourse to a singular, shared tradition is of great value to the military usage of Thanksgiving. A shared tradition allows for a relative ease in the military s ability to provide a celebration of this holiday. 1 Interestingly, in the post-Vietnam War period there has been a willingness to diverge from the traditional menu to pay heed to regional tastes.

How did the Revolutionary War create a holiday? Celebratory meals were taken up by the early American military tradition because of the deeper meanings associated with such events. The importance of the feast portion of a holiday celebration is defined in the scholarship on food and dining by the socio-cultural content it conveys.

The Clifford Geertz maxim that men have birthdays, but man does not, highlights the value of such content which create our lives, both individually and in the groups to which we belong. As Wood explains the phenomenon, at the macro-social level various forms of feasting serve to link individuals to the wider social fabric through shared understandings of cultural conventions. Thus, holiday meals and celebrations to some degree unite peoples and their culinary culture in shared symbolic experiences. 2 To inspire the martial cohesion necessary to create an army and an entirely new society, holidays played a significant role.

Recourse to socio-cultural content had strategic implications as well. The Revolutionary War was the first conflict to rely in equal terms on the relationship between the people, the state and the military which Clausewitz would identify in the Napoleonic Wars. Reflecting this new calculus in warfare, political and military leadership sensibly relied upon standard celebrations to mark the martial calendar.

In part derived from Christian ritual, in part celebrations of the fall harvest, the Colonial thanksgivings which form the popular understanding of the holiday were as likely recognized by fasts as well as feasts. Just a year shy of the Colonies declared independence, the new patriot political leaders called for a Thanksgiving fast to inspire sober reflection of the gravity of the mounting tensions with the British in the aftermath of the fighting at Lexington and Concord. Noting that a fast was called by Congress to implore the Divine Benediction on our country, Thacher defined the larger importance of the event as a factor in the development of a shared identity for the Colonies: This is the first general or Continental Fast ever observed since the settlement of the colonies. 3 Called for in the midst of increasing military conflict, it is notable that this was the first such celebration by the Colonies as a unified entity.

It can be argued that this event marks the first thanksgiving celebration defined by a unique and integral American identity. In the following year Congress called for another day of thanksgiving. This culturally American tradition was enjoyed again in 1776 by Private Joseph Martin and his fellow soldiers convalescing from small pox inoculation in Connecticut after inoculation against small pox.

Martin, a soldier, gave earnest thanks for what was (and remains) of the greatest import to the man in the war, a good meal: Of the pig and the pies we made an excellent Thanksgiving dinner, the best meal I had eaten since I left my grand sire s table. 4 With yet another thanksgiving celebration in 1777, the Revolution and the War for Independence brought the new country together in its first official national holiday. This one marked the Continental Army s victory over the British forces at Saratoga in October of that year, which success guaranteed French diplomatic and military support. In recognition of this momentous occasion Samuel Adams led the Continental Congress to declare a national day of celebration and thanks.

On 18 December of that year, the first national thanksgiving was celebrated throughout the colonies. Even the soldiers at Valley Forge in 1777 were able to celebrate with a feast. As recorded by a young surgeon, Albigence Waldo, General Washington s troops dined upon roasted pig. 5 Of course, not all soldiers dined well on that thanksgiving holiday.

Joseph Martin recounts, in sarcastic tones, the slim pickings that comprised the sumptuous feast to which his unit was treated: half a gill of rice and a tablespoonful of vinegar. Martin s ire was with his fellow citizens in civilian life, for he knew full well that while the Army endured near starvation, the citizenry at large was enjoying the abundance the country afforded. His scathing sentiment is displayed when he credits the repast provided to the soldiers to a citizenry that had opened her sympathizing heart so wide. 6 The Revolutionary War, with its near-broken logistics system, was the inspiration for the practice of griping over relative injustices.

American sensibilities, even then, favored fairness. Shared harshness could be endured for a common purpose, which explains the paradox of the strengthening cohesion of the soldiers within the army. As between the army and society, however, the growing belief that the one side was suffering unduly inspired the soldiers indignation.

This sentiment was particularly strong, because the soldiers felt poorly done by for being made to starve in a land of plenty while in noble service defending the terms of the revolution. To alleviate these negative emotions, the soldiers griped. However, Martin s prospects had improved by the late years of the war.

Returning to an area in New Jersey in which he had served earlier in the war, Martin and several of his fellow soldiers, while searching for a deserter, enjoy the late war hospitality of the locals: We had a good warm room to sit and lodge in, and as the next day was Thanksgiving, we had an excellent supper. The next morning their host provided them with toast and cider, the latter of which Martin describes as good and rich as wine, as a proper beginning to their day. However, the bounty did not end there, as the host would not allow them to leave until they had shared a genuine New Jersey breakfast with him, consisting of buckwheat pancakes flowing with butter and honey, and washed down with a capital dish of chocolate.

Their Thanksgiving continued as they lucked into obtaining lodgings with a family that felt kindly towards the Connecticut troops, as that section of the state was originally settled by Connecticut people. Finally, at another house they were again provided for by the remains of the Thanksgiving cheer. 7 In these celebrations, the sharing of the holiday with extended family that will become the standard was already in evidence in embryonic form. The citizens who provide for Martin and his comrades were happy to be clear of the British Army and loyalists, heartened by the impending victorious close of the war, and likely harbored a degree of gratitude towards the Continental soldiers.

This sharing with strangers, of making them like extended family, precedes the traditions that would accrete to the holiday in later years. However, given the notion of a Thanksgiving holiday as it existed then, where the objective was to express gratitude for the blessings one enjoyed, it seems reasonable that sharing one s good fortune would accord with the spirit of the holiday. The end of the War of 1812 was celebrated with a day of prayer and thanksgiving.

At President James Madison s urging, Congress resolved to celebrate the second victorious confrontation with the British on April 31 st of 1815. As that war is often considered the final act in the War for Independence, it is fitting that its successful conclusion should be marked by what was emerging as an American holiday. The establishment of a permanent national holiday of Thanksgiving resulted from the decades long campaign of Sarah Josepha Hale, a prominent women s magazine editor.

Beginning in 1827, her efforts finally bore fruit in September 1863, when an editorial on the subject struck a chord with President Lincoln and the public in the North. Again, this moment in the holiday s history was inspired in part by military events: Hale s editorial appeared in the wake of the Union victory at Gettysburg. This moment was particularly ripe as the victory had a tremendous effect upon popular sentiment regarding the war.

Lincoln s proclamation of that same October declaring the holiday brought the two pieces together: It has seemed to me fit and proper that God s gifts of prosperity and freedom should be solemnly, reverently and gratefully acknowledged as with one heart and one voice by the whole American people. I do, therefore, invite my fellow citizens in every part of the United States, and also those who are at sea and those sojourning in foreign lands, to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next as a day of thanksgiving and praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the heavens. 8 Thus the creation, evolution, and designation of the Thanksgiving celebration as a national, culturally American holiday were all intimately connected with the country s wars. Despite the growing importance of the holiday, particularly for the Northern forces, 1862 was a dismal Thanksgiving year for Billy Yank.

Although the Army of the Potomac fared better than the Army of Northern Virginia in the quality and quantity of rations, Union soldiers on campaign in Fredericksburg were known to suffer for lack of food. Bell Wiley, a historian of the Union and Confederate soldier experience in the war, offers the experience of one Massachusetts volunteer whose Thanksgiving meal offered little for which to be grateful: Yesterday was Thanksgiving at home, but a dismal day for us. Never since I have been in the Army have I seen supplies so short.

Now we see soldiers going round begging hard bread. Things were so bad that Wiley tells that this and other soldiers reported some were found scavenging in the slaughter pens for what meager scraps were left behind, whether that be head, hoof, or tail. 9 Americans, especially Northerners, had, by this time, developed an expectation of the feast that was meant to exemplify this holiday. Enshrined as a national holiday, Thanksgiving emerged as an event of family homecoming, in response to the societal disruption wrought by the massive economic changes in the 19 th Century, reconciling the conflict between individualism and obligation to family. 10 According to Elizabeth Pleck, the defining feature of the Thanksgiving celebration in the United States is its function as a domestic occasion.

This is: a family gathering held in the home which paid homage to the ideal of the affectionate family. Such a family was a privatized nuclear one, with a nurturant mother creating a proper home atmosphere . Although the ideal of the affectionate family was a nuclear one, the domestic occasion was often a gathering of extended kin, a family homecoming .

The domestic occasion was a culturally dominant form, practiced at first mainly by the upper classes and middle classes, which spread throughout society in the 20 th Century. 11 This concept of the holiday squares with the near manic celebration of the holiday within the American military in the 20 th Century. Deprived of the actual ability to return home in most cases, military personnel were provided the opportunity for a symbolic homecoming by partaking of the traditional meal. The menu, the specific foods, became totems of home and family for the troop who could not fulfill this domestic obligation.

The troops were thus able to pay homage to the rites and customs of the holiday. Furthermore, as Thanksgiving was a particular holiday for the extended family, the members of the unit could substitute for these relations. Finally, the family at home would know of the satellite celebrations, and be relieved that at the very least their deployed loved one was enjoying something of the holiday.

For these reasons, Thanksgiving became a very important holiday to the American Armed Forces. Pleck goes on to argue that Lincoln s role in the creation of the Thanksgiving holiday rooted the celebration in the by then established values of the country: By having Lincoln as its midwife, Thanksgiving also celebrated the blessings of American nationhood as well as its domestic ideals. Thanksgiving was and is a holiday of belief in the national purposes and destiny. 12 The holiday s association with the blessings bestowed meant that the wars, and therefore troops, fought to secure them were included as well.

The Spanish American War brought the first appearance of any significant celebration of the holiday in the south since the end of the Civil War. In the face of war, the North and South united against a common external foe. While they were encamped in Savannah awaiting embarkation for Puerto Rico, the Georgia volunteers were treated to a lavish Thanksgiving banquet in 1898 by the ladies of that city. 13 The citizens of Savannah also treated the massing soldiers from Louisiana, Mississippi, and Nebraska to a turkey dinner for Thanksgiving that same year. 14 During the Progressive Era, Thanksgiving moved into the schools as a means of indoctrinating the children of immigrants into the ways of their new country so that they could go home and be the Americanizers of their parents.

This is also a time when the Protestant roots of the holiday began to be downplayed. A holiday or celebration started by the nation s first immigrants, it could be shared with the succeeding generations of newcomers. 15 According to Pleck, this linkage to nation, rather than creed, was important to making Thanksgiving America s holiday: Yet in the case of Thanksgiving, nationalism was a more significant feature than commerce. In that sense, Hobsbawm and Ranger were correct to draw attention to nationalism as a force in creating new traditions and reinvigorating others.

Celebrating the national mission was an important impetus for the invention of Thanksgiving in the early 19 th Century and remains a central element in the holiday to this day. 16 The nationalism angle is confirmed in Etzioni s formulation of a theory of public rituals. He argues that holidays serve to socialize members of a society as well as to reaffirm their commitment to values and as such serve to sustain the integration of society. 17 Thanksgiving would also mark the end of the first global conflagration of the century. General Pershing celebrated his army in November 1918, declaring victory was the Thanksgiving gift to the American nation, and an honorable repayment of the debt owed Lafayette and the French in the Revolutionary War. 18 Another Thanksgiving meal just after the Armistice was uniquely celebrated.

William Langer, a soldier in the AEF, recounts the story in the memoir of his unit while his unit was in Verdun, awaiting transport back to the States. Upon agreement with the company cook to delay their meal to 3 or 4 o clock, the troops were promised a proper turkey dinner with all the trimmings. Just as the men sat down to tuck into the holiday feast, the bugle sounded to call the regiment.

All in the company fell out, save Langer: I was a sergeant and I thought a good soldier. Of course, I should have set a good example in answering the call without complaint. But the war was over and I decided, with the Thanksgiving dinner before me, that for once I would disobey orders.

As time passed and the rest of the company did not return, Langer began to worry, could the company have entrained to start for home? His wait was ended at long last when his unit mates returned. And what was the cause of the delay, the explanation for which was difficult to get out of his fellow soldiers?

The Regimental Chaplain had chosen that exact moment to deliver a sermon in honor of Thanksgiving and the end of the war in the ruins of the Verdun Cathedral. 19 This turn of events contains the sort of irony particular to military service: the sermon interrupted the meal, one of the few things, besides survival, for which a soldier can be truly grateful. By WWII, the American holiday, state, and armed forces had reached global maturity. A young lieutenant in Western Europe describes how the Mess Sergeant brought a proper feast to the soldiers on the front lines for Thanksgiving 1944.

A hamburger would have been a treat, but a hot turkey dinner was almost beyond belief. 20 The commitment to the meal was an institutional requirement. In a government publication meant to explain to the American public the lengths to which the armed forces would go to provide the troops with every comfort of home possible, the declaration of the institution s commitment to a proper Thanksgiving dinner was its opening salvo. Offering little room for doubt, the publication echoes the essence of the subsistence doctrine: Thanksgiving turkey, cranberry sauce, and pumpkin American food for the American soldier in England, Iceland, India, Australia, in Malayan jungle, and African deserts wherever he is fighting in this global war, the Army endeavors to feed him the food he likes, the food that makes him feel at home. 21 This commitment was shared across the services, as US Navy Thanksgiving menus from the first half of the century display the familiar gastronomic landmarks of the national meal.

Given their druthers, soldiers would assemble a feast of similar fixings on their own as well. Neal Barton records that his unit used their mess fund to put together a traditional feast for Thanksgiving 1941. Reflecting the relaxing nature of the holiday, he writes that all day long the boys visited the mess hall.

Seemed as tho they would eat, go walk it off then start the process all over. Nothing was removed from the tables but dirty or empty dishes. 22 The commitment to turkey on Thanksgiving was also codified operationally within the Quartermaster Corps. Per one subsistence publication, Turkey rations are authorized for all men actually messing with the organization on Thanksgiving .

The exact meaning of this point for the bureaucracy and administration of quartermaster duties is set out in a footnote to the above directive: The so-called turkey ration is merely the garrison ration increased by the excess cost involved when 28 ounces of turkey (undrawn) is substituted for the meat component of the garrison ration. This excess cost is computed by the regional depots on the 15 th of October of each year. A certificate showing the actual number of men present on Thanksgiving is attached to the ration return.

One hopes the turkey meat was not as dry as the language authorizing it. The recipe for Turkey, Roast from the 1941 Manual of Mess Management is equally sparse, but the ingredients and intent give prospects for a decent meal. 23 In part, these pledges were made to maintain the morale of the American civilian population. There is an almost liturgical quality to them, as if the authors realize they must include certain vital recitations to keep the public happy.

World War II was conducted on such a scale that the war could not be fought or won without public support. One very important way to secure this was to make the public feel that the troops were being well cared-for, demonstrating the military s commitment to them. Although to do so would be a substantial undertaking, no effort or expense would be spared to get it done.

Maintaining the link to home, no matter where on the globe the troops might be serving, could be achieved through the Thanksgiving menu, which recalled, at least in general terms, the sense of home. This objective is reflected in the experience of Ann McCaughey, a Red Cross Aide in France, who wrote of her Thanksgiving experience of 1944 that it was a piece of America that we had transplanted thousands of miles across the ocean and set up in the little town of Commercy in France. 24 For Charles MacDonald, Thanksgiving 1944, was not only a national holiday, but his birthday as well. Escorted to his table in the company mess hall, where he found a plate already prepared for him.

As he sat down to eat, the division orchestra broke out into Happy Birthday. He writes that it was only then that I remembered that this was something special; this was my birthday. As a cake was brought out and his men sang Happy Birthday him, he could not repress a choking sensation, nor barely keep back the tears of gratitude.

While the celebration was in itself touching, the event, with its particular emphasis upon the food tokens of a holiday and celebration, was used to signify something of greater meaning; he had earned the respect and admiration of his men. 25 Blind adherence to this institutional promise to provide a turkey dinner on Thanksgiving could also ruin the promise of this meal, as the grievously put upon Paul Boesch experienced in Germany in the fall of 1944. As was evident from previous experience, he and his fellow soldiers learned again that if Division had set its mind to something, in this case a hot turkey dinner on Thanksgiving Day , then that was what was going to happen. It was going to happen even if that meal was more a burden than a blessing.

As darkness fell that Thanksgiving evening, with the American units deployed along a hill within range of German artillery, Boesch received unwelcome news from battalion headquarters. The operations officer at the other end was calling to inform him that a hot turkey dinner had been prepared and awaited a carrying party to come pick it up and bring it back to the rest of the unit. Boesch tried to argue against the meal, but was told, It s the General s orders.

The staff officer chided him for failure to follow the faith: You want to see the men get a nice hot meal, don t you? This provoked the infantrymen s sensibilities: Well, Jeezus Christ, that s a fine way of putting it. Of course I want to see them get a hot meal.

I want to see them get three hot meals a day and a dry bed every night and a babe to sleep with, but let s save the turkey until they can pull back where they can enjoy it. Who the hell knows it s Thanksgiving except some silly bastard in the rear who gets hot meals anyway and just wants a change in diet? Attempts to make his case further up the chain of command were fruitless.

Poignantly, he argued that the folks back at division headquarters have no idea what it means to try to get food to those men, not mention the troubles of trying to eat it. Unsuccessful in this particular battle, Boesch was resentful: What the hell difference did it make when a man ate his Thanksgiving turkey? One day was like any other to us.

His soldiers echoed this sentiment, but orders were orders. The unfortunate but logical consequence of the activity in such close proximity to enemy lines followed. As the meal was being brought to the men the German artillery opened fire.

The bulk of the casualties from the barrage were taken by the men bringing the food as they were caught out in the open. For their efforts, seven men had been wounded and three killed, an awful price to pay for a Thanksgiving dinner that nobody wanted to eat. 26 While this thesis maintains that, in spirit, the foodways policy chosen for the American armed forces has tremendous potential to positively influence morale and effectiveness, it equally recognizes that even the best doctrines if poorly applied can have disastrous results. Half a world away from Lt.

Boesch s unit, on a ship operating near the Philippines in the Pacific Theatre, greater command sensibility prevailed. James Fahey s memoirs tell of how the captain, in his Thanksgiving message to the crew, decided to delay the holiday meal. Operational conditions had been such that the ship s crew was going to General Quarters with such frequency that to try to cook and serve a Thanksgiving meal would be an effort in futility.

He promised them, however, that once the situation changed a turkey dinner would be in the offing. Four days later, just outside of Palau, circumstances had changed: Today was the first chance we had to have our Thanksgiving Dinner, almost a week late but it was worth waiting for. We really had quite a feed.

Turkey, and all the trimmings. It was very good. 27 The commitment to Thanksgiving did not wane in the Korean War. By this war, the components of the holiday were firmly established.

As it happened, that first Thanksgiving of the Korean War fell during the fateful campaigns into North Korea. In the first example, PFC Herman Nelson s memories demonstrate that the celebration included a settled menu: On Thanksgiving Day, 1950, we moved to a new location near Kunu-ri, well north of the North Korean capital of Pyong Yang. We ate our Thanksgiving dinner there with an armored tank company, and it was really good.

We had a turkey dinner and all the stuff that goes with it. 28 Another soldier, writing home, told of his Thanksgiving experience: Well, here it is Thanksgiving afternoon. We ve finished eating our turkey dinner and a very fine dinner it was indeed. Every man had all he wanted to it.

It s about time. We had turkey (frozen, shipped from the States) sweet potatoes, corn, stuffing, gravy, olives, pie, and candy. We were very lucky we got all that as we were only relieved from the line yesterday.

Lucky indeed, as he went on to tell that his unit had been treated to hot showers as well. As this was the first such opportunity to shower since late September, these soldiers had much for which to be grateful. 29 Montross and Canzona s history of Marine Corps Operations in the Korean War demonstrates that this first celebration of the Thanksgiving holiday in that war included all of the necessary components: Thanksgiving Day, which fell on the 23d, was celebrated both in Korea and the United States . It was a tribute to American bounty as well as organizational genius that the troops in Korea were served a dinner which would have done credit to a first-rate Stateside restaurant.

The menu, as proposed by X Corps to component units, included roast young tom turkey with cranberry sauce, candied sweet potatoes fruit cake, mince pie and coffee. 30 Generally speaking, however, the Chosin Thanksgiving experience varied depending on where a unit was in the march north. The campaign presented unique complications to front line food service. As they moved north towards the Yalu River, the units that comprised X Corps had several different experiences of Thanksgiving.

In his history of the Marine campaign in North Korea, Edwin Simmons provides photographs to document the celebrations of the units stationed at the bases at Hamhung and Hagaru-ri. 31 One Marine, Lance Corporal Harold Mulhausen, certain that the operation would mean missing the holiday dinner, found otherwise: On Thanksgiving Day, 1950, the Marines continued to move north toward the Chosin Reservoir .we were pretty upset over the thought of missing our Thanksgiving dinner .To our great joy, next morning the cooks brought the kitchens up to our positions and we had our Thanksgiving dinner after all turkey, dressing, pumpkin pie, and all the goodies. It was delicious and I ate until my belly nearly popped. 32 Interestingly, there is a contradiction between the official history of the Marine Thanksgiving of 1950 and the experiences of specific units and personnel. In their description of the Thanksgiving for Lieutenant Colonel Raymond Davis unit, Montross and Canzona record that the men of 1/7 belatedly celebrated Thanksgiving on the 24 th with a full, hot turkey dinner. 33 As recounted in Martin Russ history of the campaign, according to Davis, the dinner did not go as smoothly as that: We were out on the very end of the limb tactically.

When the turkeys caught up with us they were frozen solid and the cooks couldn t figure out how to thaw them. What we finally did was make a mountain of birds around two fired-up field kitchen stoves, then covered the whole affair with two pyramidal tents sealed tight with snow. By morning the birds were thawed enough for the cooks to cut up and cook, which took several hours.

We rotated the platoons down from the slopes throughout the day. Lieutenant Lee s platoon, at the point, didn t get the word, however; each man had to settle for a cup of reconstituted milk and two slices of fresh bread. I felt bad about that. 34 Joseph Owen, a platoon commander in Davis battalion, provides an even bleaker picture.

Describing the policy initiative that drove the Thanksgiving efforts that year, he suggests in his memoir that the impetus behind it was for public relations purposes, suggesting that it was especially important to the military leadership in Tokyo that the front-line troops be shown enjoying the bounties of Thanksgiving. As a measure of the hubris he believed had infected General MacArthur s command, he notes that, despite intense combat with the Chinese forces who had entered the war, they could afford to give the men not only the traditional meal, but also the day off. Regarding the meal itself, we had our dinner in frigid darkness at 2300.

However, even then problems arose: We sat in the snow and on the big boulders with overflowing trays. We relished the feast before us, but we had not reckoned with the cold. The temperature had sunk far below zero again, and our food began to freeze before we could set a fork into it.

The giblet gravy congealed and became an icy coating over the chilled turkey and mashed potatoes. The cranberry sauce became sherbet. The oranges froze as hard as baseballs.

To add insult to injury, Owen and one of his corpsmen were sniped at while they tried to make the best of their dinner. 35 The celebration of the holiday continued through the conflicts of the late 20 th century. And in the first decade of the new century, the tradition did not wane as American troops found themselves abroad again for the holiday. Firmly established, the institutional menu can now take account of changes in tastes, so that troops have enjoyed deep fried and Cajun spiced turkeys alongside the traditional fare.

Nevertheless, the iconic meal remains, no better demonstrated in the surprise trip of then President George W. Bush to Baghdad Airport to deliver the main course. Which event was ultimately rendered thusly: So, America, when you sit down to eat your turkey dinner today, put aside the myths of your childhood.

Your holiday has its roots in the martial traditions and experiences which have formed the identity and ethos of the nation. Notes 1 Priscilla Ferguson, A Cultural Field in the Making, pp.

  • A WEEKEND OF VARIED EMOTIONS A WEEKEND OF VARIED EMOTIONS Last weekend was a mixture of frustration (to put it mildly in one case), disappointment, encouragement and excitement for our teams as summarised below. Ladies 1sts . The team laboured to a deserved 4-1 win at a cold Weybread over bottom-placed Ipswich.

Emma Lee-Smith put them ahead in the first half only for a lively Ipswich to equalise after the break. The game was then transformed when seemingly out of the blue Abby Gooderham fired home one of the goals of the season with a superb reverse stick shot from the edge of the circle. Susan Wessels then converted a penalty corner before Abby set up Susan for a simple tap-in after another piece of individual skill.

With time running out Abby seemed destined for a deserved second goal only for the umpire to blow for the end of the game with the ball about to roll into the unguarded goal! The team remains in fourth place and this coming Saturday is away to Maidenhead (1.30). Ladies 2nds.

There was further frustration for the team when they conceded two early goals away to St Albans 2nds following decisions which on another day might have gone in their favour. But they went on to battle hard combined with some excellent hockey and they got a deserved late goal when Kara Kilbourn deflected home at a penalty corner. With this 2-1 defeat the team need to win at least two of their last three games (starting at home this Saturday against Maidstone (2.00) to have any chance of avoiding relegation.

Ladies 3rds . After their 6-0 away win over Pelicans 2nds (with goals by Sarah Legg 2, Millie Preece 2, Katie Ogden and Mia King) and the draw for the 4ths the team now lead their league by three points from the 4ths who have a game in hand. Katie Woollatt was MOTM.

This Saturday Lucy Field and her team are at home after four successive away games when they host third-placed UEA 2nds (3.30). Ladies 4ths . After five wins on the trot the team had to be content with a 1-1 home draw against a gritty Norwich City 2nds.

Laura Tibbenham put them ahead in the first half after considerable City pressure and City hit back with a scrappy goal after the break for a deserved equaliser. Despite these two dropped points Treacle Griffin and her team can still win the league but they have a tricky away game with fourth placed Norwich Dragons 3rds (11.30) this Saturday who drew last weekend after coming up against the resolute defence of lowly Evergreens. END OF SEASON SENIOR AWARDS EVENING including Buffet & Disco SATURDAY 19 MARCH, APOLLO CLUB, HARLESTON Arrive 7.30pm Awards 8.00pm Taxis 12.00am.

Two weeks ago in a re-arranged away game the team went down 6-3 to Watton 2nds but they were determined there would be no repeat at home and they ran out comfortable 4-0 winners. Imi Meynell-Anderson and Alice Evans-Hendrick put them 2-0 up at half time and skipper Jose Tibbenham made the game save with a couple later in the game. Fourth place is still attainable by the team but they will need to keep winning including at home to UEA 3rds on Saturday (10.15).

Ladies 6ths . It was good to see the team earn a deserved point at home in a 2-2 draw with Evergreens 2nds. Ellie Fawkner gave them a first half lead and after Evergreens fought back to take the lead Ellie popped up with the equaliser with five minutes to go in an end to end match.

This Saturday they are away to Norwich Dragons 6ths (3.15). Ladies 7ths . With a scheduled 5.30 start away to Norwich City 7ths the team knew they were in for a late finish.

In the event with a delayed start they eventually came off the pitch at 7.20! After starting with ten players they lost Jane Collins through injury. Nevertheless they put up in a strong performance eventually losing 3-0.

This week they are at home to Pelicans 3rds (12.15). Girls Development . Manager Sandra Elliner was obliged to select a very young side to play Pelicans with several players unavailable as they were playing the next day and with four playing for the 6ths.

After a good game Pelicans came out on top winning 2-0. This Saturday the team is away to Yarmouth (10.00) whom they beat 5-0 in the middle of December. Men s 1sts.

They just had to win their home match on Sunday with Teddington to keep alive their very slim national league survival hopes but it wasn t to be sadly as they went down 5-3. Myles King (with his first national league goal) and Ben Wright (with a penalty stroke conversion) had given the team the boost of a two-goal lead. Teddington hit back just before the interval and the game was transformed early in the second half with Teddington scoring three times in four minutes.

Myles then scored again to give Magpies some hope but seeking an equaliser Magpies were caught on the break and the visitors, for whom it was good see out-on-loan Carl Sitch playing against his brother Leigh, scored again to win 5-3. This Sunday the team play their last home game of the season when they host Cambridge City at the changed time of 12 noon. Men s 2nds .

Skipper Lawrence Baynes and his team were looking to build on their fine away win over Spalding when they took on fellow-strugglers Cambridge Univ 2nds at Weybread. It was soon clear they were in for a tough game and it was good to see Sam Moore and Richard Ling playing for Magpies for whom Thomas Ridley was in sparkling form. After a keen struggle the game seemed to be heading for a goalless draw but the students struck with five minutes to go.

This spurred Magpies on even further and Thomas gave them a deserved equaliser. While now off the bottom of the league Magpies will need to win at least two of their last four games to avoid relegation starting hopefully away to Felixstowe on Saturday (2.00). Men s 3rds .

The team knew they were in for a tough game against league leaders IES 2nds despite beating them at home 5-1 earlier in the season. They conceded two sloppy goals early in the game and after getting to half time without further damage they let in another soon after.

3-0 down soon came 4-0 but third-placed Magpies hit back with late goals by Jake Sewell and skipper Matt Brand to lose 4-2. With three games left promotion is still a possibility for Magpies but they will need to beat Norwich City 4ths at home on Saturday (1.45) to have a realistic chance.

END OF SEASON SENIOR AWARDS EVENING including Buffet & Disco please see above Men s 4ths . After their fine win over IES 3rds the previous week the team took a big step to avoiding relegation when they beat IES 4ths 1-0 away to move up to 5th place in their league. Their goal came in the last minute through Ali Williamson with his first for the club in thirteen years after he beat three players in the circle.

What a goal! But they are still not completely safe although a win on Saturday at home to North Norfolk 2nds (12.00) would do the trick. Men s 5ths .

They were up against league leaders Bury St Edmunds 4ths in the last game at Weybread by which time I have to confess I had sought the warmth of the clubhouse and with it an excellent meal thanks to the Ladies 1sts. Andy Caston twice brought his team level before Bury pulled away to lead 5-2. Lewis Belsey then scored to make the final score a respectable 5-3.

On Saturday they are away to Thetford Town (2.30) who like them are in mid-table comfort. Men s 6ths . Eric Davy s team continues to amaze!

Their 2-1 home win over Norwich Dragons 5ths was their seventh in their last eight games with the other ending in a draw. They were a goal down at half time before Eric got the equaliser (although this was incorrectly challenged in the clubhouse by jealous team-mates!) after Jon Wells had created the penalty corner. With seven minutes to go and with an appreciative roar from the spectators Richard Chopper Allcock fired home the winner after a shot from Roger Kent had come back off a post.

The prospect of promotion for the team remains a concern (!) but they have three demanding games remaining including away to Norfolk Nomads on Saturday (2.30). Boys Development . While father Andy was scoring a brace for the 5ths sons Tom and Jake Caston were scoring the four goals by which the Dev team won 4-0 away to Pelicans.

Tom went one better than his father scoring three times while Jake had to be content with one. The team, which does not have a game this week, is now back on the top of their league two points ahead of Norwich Dragons (having played a game more) who they play away on Saturday week. Mixed.

The team is at home to Norwich City on Sunday (2.00) in the 3rd round of the EH Trophy. U18 Girls. The team had the frustration of their mini-bus breaking down on their long trip to play Neston South Wirral on Sunday in the quarter-finals of the EH Plate.

They then had the further frustration of losing 1-0 through a late goal. But to their credit they honoured the fixture. U16 Girls.

Frustration mixed with bewilderment (and something stronger) must have be the emotions of the team and their supporters when after beating Cambridge City 2-1 and drawing 1-1 with hosts Leicester in the regional finals their game against Worcester was called off with ten minutes to go when they were leading 8-0 (with Abby Gooderham scoring a remarkable seven goals). The reason being that it says in the rules no team may lose by more than eight goals. This meant our team lost out to Leicester on goal difference of two after Leicester had surprisingly beaten a strong looking Cambridge City 8-0.

U16 Boys. They had drama of their own at the regional finals in Canterbury drawing 3-3 with Teddington after being three up with six minutes to play. They then came from two down to draw 2-2 with Old Loughtonians before losing 3-1 to Canterbury.

U14 Girls. They missed out on reaching their regional final when they lost 3-2 away to Norwich City. They recovered from 3-0 down with goals by Grace Collison and Georgie Cantrell and were pressing for the equaliser at the final whistle.

U14 Boys. The team is through to the Midlands regional final on goal difference after Norwich Dragons beat Bury St Edmunds 3-1 on Sunday. U10/U12 Boys and Girls.

Congratulations to our four A teams who have qualified for the East Finals to be held at Weybread over the weekend of Saturday/Sunday 16/17 April after their exciting successes in the Norfolk Championships at Pelicans HC on Sunday. The U10 Girls finished as champions while the other teams came second. This coming Sunday they will be joined by our B teams, who had their own event at Weybread, when they all compete in the Norwich Dragons Minis.

Finally, a remarkable record at Weybread last Saturday when on the sand-based pitch there was a member of the Davy family playing in all four games for Magpies, namely Louise (10.45 for the 5ths), Katie (12.15 for the Development), father Eric (1.45 for the 6ths) and Louise and Julie and mother Marie (3.15 for the 6ths). Best of luck to all our teams this weekend. Please see the website for the full list of fixtures.

  • A2Z Analysiz: TNA Bound for Glory 2013 (Bully Ray, AJ Styles ... For an easy to navigate archive of my TNA reviews, please visit Total Nonstop Ziegler 1 ! Viejas Arena San Diego, California Sunday, October 20, 2013 Mike Tenay and Taz are on commentary. PRESHOW MATCH: Gauntlet Bad Influence vs.

Joseph Park & Eric Young vs. The BroMans vs. Chavo Guerrero & Hernandez Christopher Daniels and Kazarian drew number one, while Chavo and Hernandez drew number two.

Kazarian and Chavo start the match. Things are fast and furious from the get-go, with the referee having very little control of the action. Hernandez is able to pick up both members of Bad Influence for a simultaneous over-the-shoulder backbreaker.

He and Chavo hit a dual Air Mexico to wipe out their opponents again. They take a commercial break because this preshow is on Spike TV. When we come back Bad Influence has taken control.

An abrupt commercial break cuts into the match again, and when we come back from this one Hernandez is able to make a hot tag. Chavo and Daniels are legal now and Chavo is working Daniels over with a flurry of offense. Daniels is in trouble as Chavo hits the Three Amigos and goes up top.

Chavo goes for the Frog Splash but Kazarian shoves him down and Daniels gets a schoolboy rollup to advance at 5:41 (shown). Young and Park are the next team out. They charge the ring and take it to Daniels and Kazarian.

Bad Influence is able to weather the storm and they isolate the inexperienced Park in their half of the ring. They take a commercial break and come back with Bad Influence still in control on Park. This goes on for quite some time, with Daniels and Kazarian seeming to enjoy beating on the most inexperienced person in the match.

After another commercial break Park finally makes the hot tag and Young is all kinds of fired up. Daniels cuts him off with a uranage slam but can t connect with the Best Moonsault Ever. Young whips Daniels into a Samoan Drop by Park and that s enough to put Daniels away at 8:41 (shown, total match time shown 14:22).

Tenay always calls a Samoan drop a fallaway slam for some reason, but Tenay is an idiot. Either move should not be enough to finish, even in a gauntlet. Ever the sore losers, Daniels and Kazarian attack Park and Young after the bell and lay them out.

The BroMans make their way out and appear to have easy pickings. Robbie E and Jessie Godderz go to work on Young, who is by himself since Park was so injured he got taken to the back. Young is able to withstand the punishment and he makes a comeback.

He hits E with Hail to the King but Godderz breaks it up. The BroMans cut Young off and hit him with the Hart Attack to get the pin at 2:48 (total match time shown 17:10). They ve got Bad Influence right there, being all over and stuff, and they give the title shot to the BroMans?

What the hell? The match was okay enough though hard to get into because of the commercials and the very nature of gauntlet matches, but the booking is just puzzling. Rating: ** MATCH #1: Ultimate X Match for the X Division Championship Austin Aries vs.

Manik vs. Chris Sabin vs. Jeff Hardy vs.

Samoa Joe Manik has been the Champion since 7.25.13, and this is his second defense. Hardy is making his Ultimate X debut, Aries is coming into the match for the second time (winning his only previous outing), Sabin has been in it 16 times and won seven (and he has Velvet Sky in his corner), Joe has been in it once before, and Manik is making his sixth appearance (just counting all the Suicide and Manik appearances as one character) with two wins. Overall this is the thirty-second Ultimate X match.

Sabin immediately climbs up but thinks better of it, and he takes Aries to the floor for a brawl. Manik, Joe, and Hardy brawl and things get crazy real quick. Joe looks good in the early going but of course it s not to last with this many talented wrestlers in the match at one time.

Everyone gets a chance to show off in the first few minutes, as they re all trying to stake their claim to the title. Hardy brings out a ladder but Joe cuts him off with an elbow suicida before he can use it. Joe grabs the ladder but Sabin kicks it back into his face.

Manik takes Sabin out, and then Aries takes out Manik and Joe. Aries goes for the belt but celebrates prematurely and Manik cuts him off. Action continues coming fast and furious from all five competitors.

Joe and Hardy climb the ladder and try to take the belt down, but Joe knocks Hardy down and Aries dropkicks Joe off the ladder. Aries goes up the ladder now while Manik goes the traditional route to meet him. Sabin knocks both of them down.

Hardy recovers and hits Sabin with the Twist of Fate. Sabin forces Velvet into the ring against her will, and Hardy the gentleman politely moves her out of the way. That s distraction enough for Sabin to get to the top of the ladder and grab the belt, and when Hardy tries to grab it Sabin decks him and falls to the mat to win the title at 11:59.

That was the usual fun Ultimate X action throughout, and the finish does a lot to make Sabin look like a super douche and I like that. Rating: *** MATCH #2: World Tag Team Championships James Storm & Gunner vs. The BroMans Storm and Gunner have been the Champion since 6.2.13, and this is their first defense.

Robbie E and Jessie Godderz are accompanied by Mr. Olympia, a big bodybuilder dude. The Champions attack right away and beat the BroMans down.

Storm and Gunner are in total control in the early going, making the challengers look like chumps. E and Godderz are able to make the comeback on Gunner, and they cut the ring off nicely. After a few minutes Gunner is able to take Godderz down with a fallaway slam from the middle rope.

The Modern Day Viking is one of the dumber nicknames I ve ever heard. At any rate, hot tags are made and Storm is a house afire. The referee loses control and all four men are fighting in the ring at the same time.

Storm goes for the Eye of the Storm but E counters it to an implant DDT for two. The chaos continues and the referee doesn t even bother trying to restore order. Storm sets up for the Last Call on Godderz, but E throws a tag title belt in the ring to distract him.

The referee gets the belt out of the ring and E takes Storm down with a clothesline from the second rope. The BroMans then hit the Hart Attack to get the pin and shockingly win the titles at 11:43. The match was pretty solid formula stuff, but the BroMans, really?

I m just not sure what was behind that decision. Rating: ** MATCH #3: Knockouts Championship ODB vs. Gail Kim vs.

Brooke ODB has been the Champion since 9.19.13, and this is her first defense. Gail and Brooke decide they would like to work together on the Champion, but ODB thwarts them and sends Gail to the floor. The action carries on at a fairly rapid rate, with Gail spending a lot of time on the floor, even staying out there to put Brooke in the ring post figure-four.

When Gail gets back in the ring Brooke kicks her right in the head and then ODB hits her with a Spear to send her back to the floor. The battle continues and they fight to the top rope, where ODB tries to bring both Brooke and Gail down with a superplex. That doesn t work, and Gail comes down with a missile dropkick on DOB.

Brooke follows with Hail to the King and all three women are down. Back on their feet the offense continues to come from everywhere, and the referee gets taken out. ODB puts both Brooke and Gail on her shoulders but Brooke escapes.

The Champ takes her down and drops Gail on top of her. ODB covers but Lei D Tapa s music hits and she makes her way out. The Champion is not scared and she goes right out after Tapa.

That backfires when Tapa flattens ODB with a kick to the face. Brooke tries a cross body from the top rope but Tapa catches her and powerbombs her into the ring. Gail crawls over and covers Brooke to get the pin at 10:21.

After the match, Gail and Tapa reveal that they were in cahoots the whole time. That was quite a bit of action from three fairly decent wrestlers, and the finish was a fine heel turn for Gail. Or was she already a heel?

Who can remember? Rating: ** MATCH #4: Kurt Angle vs. Bobby Roode They start with some chain wrestling, naturally.

Roode gets the better of it and goes for the Crossface but Angle is able to slip out and take a quick powder. Back in the ring Angle goes for the Ankle Lock but Roode counters out of it. Angle gets fired up and starts throwing suplexes so Roode wisely takes a breather on the floor.

There s no break for Roode though, as Angle follows him out and continues the abuse. Roode is able to withstand the attacks and he goes to work on Angle, focusing on his neck. Angle fights back with more suplexes.

Roode cuts him off with a spinebuster for a two-count. Angle re-counters with an Ankle Lock but Roode escapes again. Roode sidesteps a charging Angle, sending Angle shoulder-first into the ring post.

The tenacious Roode locks on the Crossface but Angle is able to reach the ropes. They fight up on the top rope and Angle knocks Roode down to the mat. Angle goes for the Moonsault but misses and Roode once again cinches in the Crossface, which Angle counters to the Ankle Lock.

Roode perseveres and re-counters to the Crossface. After some cradle reversals for two-counts, Roode puts the Crossface on again. Angle turns this one into an Angle Slam for two.

He starts throwing more suplexes so Roode hits a covert low blow. Roode hits an Attitude Adjustment for a near-fall. Angle puts the Ankle Lock on and the referee raises Roode s hand to see if he s unconscious (why???), and that allows Roode to reach the ropes.

I don t like that spot at all. Angle brings Roode up top and hits a Super Angle Slam. Both men are down.

The referee puts on the 10-count, and Roode actually gets to his feet first and crawls over to make the cover and get the pin at 20:57. What a lame, cop-out finish. It s the kind of finish that really doesn t do much for Roode, as Angle essentially beat himself.

The match was fine enough, but the usual trade submission holds and finishers for 10-15 minutes stuff that Angle has been doing for years now. Enough already. Rating: ** MATCH #5: Ethan Carter III vs.

Norv Fernum Obviously this is not going to be a competitive match. This reminds me of when MVP made his WWE debut against Marty Garner at No Mercy in 2006. Fernum gets in some token jobber offense but EC3 pretty much dominates him.

EC3 hits the headlock driver to get the pin at 3:26. That would have been fine on IMPACT Wrestling , but not so much for a pay-per-view. Rating: * MATCH #6: Magnus vs.

The Icon Sting This match is supposed to make Magnus, so expectations are high. They start off slowly and Sting appears to have the early advantage. Magnus gets a little aggressive and is able to take control.

Sting fights back with a flurry of offense, including a Stinger Splash. He locks on the awful Scorpion Deathlock and Magnus easily powers out. They run towards each other and hit simultaneous clotheslines.

They rise to their feet and Sting tries some punches but Magnus no-sells him (mocking Sting in the process). Magnus hits a Stinger Splash and a Magnus Driver for two. Sting fights back with his own Stinger Splash and then puts on the Scorpion Deathlock again, and it looks terrible just like it always has in TNA.

He s not even sitting down! Make it look good or don t do it! Magnus reaches the ropes.

Sting tries another Stinger Splash but Magnus catches him with a European Uppercut. Magnus hits the Scorpion Death Drop and then the Diving elbow drop for a two-count. He goes up for another elbow but Sting moves out of the way.

Sting tries the Scorpion Death Drop but Magnus fights it off. Magnus puts on the King s Lynn Cloverleaf and Sting taps out at 11:04. Well, that sucked.

They did some chain wrestling, traded some finishers, and presented an anticlimactic finish. Sorry, but it just doesn t mean anything to beat Sting anymore. The crowd was flat throughout the match too.

This just didn t work on any level. Sting goes for a handshake after the match but Magnus blows him off. Rating: * MATCH #7: No Disqualification World Heavyweight Championship Match AJ Styles vs.

Bully Ray Bully has been the Champion since 8.15.13, and this is his second defense. The Champion uses his size and power to intimidate AJ in the early going. Tenay calls AJ a former five-time World Champion, but that s not true, he s at four right now.

Bully talks a lot of trash as he beats on AJ, as they try to ramp up the drama. AJ gets angry and unleashes with The Dropkick. He locks on the Calf Killer and Garett Bischoff runs out to break it up and give Bully the hammer.

Bully tries to use the hammer but AJ blocks it and takes control of the weapon. AJ goes to use it but Bully stops him as well. No hammer for anybody.

Bully continues to abuse AJ, but the fiery challenger gets right back in Bully s face and tells him to bring it on. AJ goes to the top rope but Knux makes his way out, and he catches AJ coming down and crushes him with a Chokeslam. Bully crawls over to make the cover but only gets two.

The crowd is not popping for anything. Bully accidentally takes Knux out with a clothesline and AJ grabs a quick rollup for two. The fight spills to the floor and Bully tries to hit AJ with the hammer but AJ stops him with the Pele.

AJ puts Bully on a ringside table and tries a springboard 450 splash but he misses and AJ destroys the table. Taz gives Bully a box cutter and Bully starts tearing apart the ring. Bully exposes the boards underneath the mat and then calls out Dixie Carter for some reason.

Dixie hands Bully a steel chair, but AJ has recovered and he hits Bully with the springboard flying forearm, knocking the chair back into his face. AJ then connects with the springboard 450 but Dixie tells referee Earl Hebner not to make the count. This is lame.

AJ goes for the Styles Clash but Bully backdrops him onto the exposed wood. Ouch. Bully goes to the second rope and (sort of) hits a senton but it only gets two.

The Champion cracks AJ with a steel chair and then goes for a piledriver. AJ escapes and hits the Pele, and then decks Bully with the chair. He goes up top and hits Spiral Tap to get the pin at 20:28.

I was worried when Dixie came out that they were going to do too much with her, and thankfully they kept her involvement to a minimum (although none would have been preferable). AJ and Bully have good chemistry together and had they cut out a lot of the forced drama in the opening minutes it would have probably been a better match. They mixed in some good high spots and false finishes, and I love that AJ has a move that he always wins with.

This was pretty good but not the epic TNA was presenting it as.

  • Accurate or Not?

CIA Slams '13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of ... Amid the buzz surrounding "" which was released on January 15, there's a strong negative response from the CIA. Ryan Trapani, a spokesman for the agency, questioned the accuracy of the action movie starring . "No one will mistake this movie for a documentary," Trapani told the Washington Post. "It's a distortion of the events and people who served in Benghazi that night. It's shameful that, in order to highlight the heroism of some, those responsible for the movie felt the need to denigrate the courage of other Americans who served in harm's way." The officer in charge of the CIA's Benghazi base that night the attacks took place even pointed out some of the false accounts in the film. "There never was a stand-down order," said the chief, known as Bob. "At no time did I ever second-guess that the team would depart." "So much of this information has been wrong," he explained why he agreed to finally speak out about the incident on the condition that his last name not be used.

Supporting his story, congressional investigators also have concluded there was no "stand down" order. Mitchell Zuckoff, whose book is used as source material for the Michael Bay-directed pic, defended the movie though. He said during a phone interview that he stood by the depiction and that it was based on first-hand accounts. "I think the evidence is extremely strong that the guys' account is far more credible" than that of the CIA chief, Zuckoff said.

He told Variety, "These guys the security contractors are putting their lives and their reputations on the line saying, 'We were forced to wait, and the record shows it.' " Zuckoff added that he had made multiple requests through the CIA to speak with Bob to hear his side of the story during the writing of the book, but Bob refused them.

  • Age UK Norwich Art Exhibition at largest Norfolk Hospital Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals will be featuring a new art exhibition from Age UK Norwich which aims to capture older people s history in words, pictures and sounds. The exhibition will be on show along the hospital street Level 1, and will feature important moments to promote a better sense of understanding and care. The exhibition showcases five Life Stories created by students from the Jane Austen College who have worked closely with local older people to produce Life Story Scrapbooks.

BBC Voices trained the pupils in recording skills and alongside the photography and scrapbook display, the public will be able to hear the older people s memories come to life. Emma Jarvis, Hospital Arts Co-ordinator, said: People visit hospitals for a variety of reasons so we provide a wide variety of art for patients, visitors and staff. We are really pleased to be showcasing the work by Age UK Norwich especially as Age UK is of service to both the visitors and patients of our older people s medicines wards and the art is a way of displaying both services available and information.

Age UK Norwich Chief Executive Susan Ringwood said: The life stories work we do is an important project helping to prevent older people from becoming invisible. If the time comes when their abilities do become impaired, there is a record of who this person once was, what they have done, where they have been. This intergenerational project lasted three months and is just one example of the work Age UK Norwich carries out in the city to help tackle loneliness and social isolation.

The exhibition is open until the end of April 2016.

Notes: The Hospital Arts Project at NNUH works on diverse projects with the community, interior design, site specific arts, performances, workshops, exhibitions, events and gardens Is hospital arts charitably funded as a whole? Many of its projects project are funded by grants from organisations and charitable donations.

  • AHDB Pork explains why prices remain “stubbornly low” Subdued retail sales of pigmeat across Europe, despite rising overall levels of consumption, is one of the main reasons why pig prices have remained stubbornly low this year, says AHDB Pork. Drawing on the results of a detailed analysis of consumption trends and retail sales in major EU markets, AHDB Pork reports that retail demand for pigmeat remains under pressure in Europe, even though consumption has begun to rise again. This combination of higher consumption and subdued retail sales, which was also apparent in the UK, suggests that an increasing proportion of pork is being eaten in foodservice or as processed products, said AHDB Pork, observing that these markets are generally much more price sensitive than the retail market .

Therefore, in order for them to absorb the increased amount of pork available, the price inevitably has to fall. With Germany, France, Italy and Spain all showing similar consumption/retail trends, AHDB Pork reaches a fairly downbeat conclusion. For prices to pick up, either supplies need to tighten, unlikely before the end of the year, at least, or retail sales will need to increase, it said, adding that with the EU economy still struggling, this doesn t seem particularly likely either.

Therefore, the outlook for EU pig prices still seems fairly pessimistic, with an inevitable knock-on effect on the UK market.

King' 's Way Christian beat Medical Lake 47-45. (GORDON KING/Gordon King Photography) YAKIMA The ghostly, tired faces emerging from the King s Way Christian boys basketball locker room didn t look like those of a team that had just won a nail-biter in the state playoffs. King s Way beat Medical Lake 47-45 on Thursday to reach the Class 1A semifinals at the SunDome. But the Knights faced their biggest foe before the 2 p.m.

tipoff. As a stomach flu swept through the team, several players fell ill between breakfast and the game s start. After a sluggish first half saw King s Way fall behind 29-21, Karter Graves supplied the remedy.

The guard hit three straight 3-pointers, each shot injecting life into the Knights. When the last of those 3 s tied the game at 32 four minutes into the second half, King s Way had found its stride. Honestly, he saved the game for us, senior Kienan Walter said.

No question about it. We were down a little bit mentally even though we still knew we could win. But Karter made it a reality.

Walter scored 24 points and Graves had 16. The rest of the team had just seven points. The King s Way offense was like a V-8 engine with just two cylinders firing, but it got the Knights across the finish line.

You could tell we weren t all there with the way we were playing, Graves said. We were obviously fatigued. But being able to come together as a unit and get the win is very satisfying.

Graves and Walter teamed up for the winning basket in an unconventional way. Walter s putback after Graves missed a free throw gave the Knights a 47-45 lead with one minute to play. Medical Lake missed a one-and-one free throw on its next possession, but had a chance to at least tie the game after getting the ball back with 17 seconds to play.

Cory Wagner s tightly defended 3-point attempt hit only the backboard. Cole Soliday grabbed the offensive rebound, but his off-balance shot at the buzzer missed. Next, King s Way (21-4) will face defending state champion King s on Friday at 5:30 p.m.

The Seattle team is 22-3. The challenge is going to be great, King s Way coach Daven Harmeling said. But you don t work hard to hope things are easy.

Medical Lake (19-8) controlled the tempo in the first half with Jaelon Stith scoring 15 of his team-high 20 points. But it was a different story when King s Way switched to man-to-man defense after halftime. Some of the zone defense we have run has been effective for us recently, Harmeling said.

But they started to carve it up, get open looks and kill us on the glass. We had to switch out of that and get to our staple, what our guys know best. And that s when some Knights made key contributions that didn t involve scoring.

Preston Danberg had a team-high six rebounds, most of them in the second half. Darion Lycksell dialed up the defensive pressure on Medical Lake s two starting guards, who scored just 13 points in the second half compared to 23 in the first. He s like guarding him for the full length of the court, Walter said of Lycksell.

That s a lot of effort and it was cool to see him do that. We knew something needed to change to get us back in the game, and it started with defense. After Graves began knocking down 3-pointers, Medical Lake began defending more on the perimeter.

That opened up space near the hoop for Walter, who scored 10 straight Knights points from the late third quarter to early fourth. Kienan owes Karter, Harmeling said. I think he had six free points from them flying out at Karter.

They re really close friends, so it was fun to watch them will our team back into it. • All Apologies: 22 Times Justin Bieber Said 'Sorry' The road to Justin Bieber 1 's upcoming album Purpose has been an apologetic one. In fact, saying that he's sorry for his past has been one of the premiere promotional tools for his highly-anticipated follow-up to 2013 compilation Journals . Sidebar Justin Bieber: 'I Want to Live Like Jesus' Even before he kicked off his notorious string of bad behavior in 2013 and 2014, however, Bieber has been offering mea culpas to fans for his actions, whether intentionally or accidentally terrible.

Here are 22 of the 22-year-old's best apologies.

    1. Apology for ignoring British fans (2010) 2 "Wish I could have come out from the performance at the Mayfair but security wouldn't let me. For those girls who cursed me out for it, I'm sorry, but sometimes I need to listen to security so no one gets hurt.

But I like your attitude. The UK goes hard." 2. Apology for ignoring Brazilian fans (2011) 3 "Love when the press think I'm annoyed because I look tired.

    I'm just tired. It's normal. I'm not a machine.

I'm in Brazil!! Not annoyed. I'm excited." 3.

Apology for ignoring French fans (2012) 4 "The other day in the airport I got surrounded by 20 paps. I don't like small spaces, and I just wanted to get on the plane. I ran to get through the gate and there is a video of me running by fans and on the other side you don't see the 20 paps.

I would never run by my fans. For those that I did pass that day I AM SORRY. I know my fans are my everything.

I know my responsibility to love them. I LOVE MY BELIEBERS." 4. Apology for flipping off paparazzi (2011) 5 "Had a great bday and at the end of the night 6 ] got surrounded by paps and I reacted in a way I know better.

I'm sorry. #killthemwithkindness. It's not always easy but I know better than to react in anger." 5. Apology for throwing up onstage (2012) 7 "I know that you guys don't judge me, do you?

You love me just the same, even though I'm throwing up all over the stage. You love me that much?" 6. Apology to Bill Clinton after cussing him out on video (2013) 8 "Thanks for taking the time to talk, Mr.

President. Your words meant a lot. #greatguy" 7. Apology for canceled show (2015) 9 "I look forward to the opportunity to give my UK beliebers a great show in the near future and hope to honor my commitment to the Prince's Trust at that time." 8.

Apology for canceled TV appearance 10 (2010) "Just want to let my people in Germany know I won't be on Wetten Dass tonight as an accident has taken place and we all don't think it is right to continue ... I'm sorry we couldn't perform tonight but some things are more important than putting on a show." 9. Apology for smoking weed (2013) 11 "I also heard he got busted for smoking weed," Bieber said in a Saturday Night Live sketch in reference to himself. "And he's really sorry about it.

And people make mistakes. And he's never gonna do it again." 10. Apology to China and Japan after visiting a controversial Tokyo shrine honoring fallen WWII soldiers, including war criminals (2014) 12 13 "While in Japan, I asked my driver to pull over for which I saw a beautiful shrine.

I was misled to think the Shrines were only a place of prayer. To anyone I have offended, I am extremely sorry. I love you China and I love you Japan." 11.

Apology to Argentina for mishandling the country's flag onstage (2013) 14 15 "People throw stuff on my stage all show and I get it to the stage hands to get off so no one got hurt. That video I saw a bra and thought it was a shirt. I'm being told by my team it was a shirt, but even if it was a flag I would never do anything to disrespect Argentina or the fans." 12.

Apology for walking off stage (2015) 16 "Sadly, it's been a rough week for me, long days no sleep while having to be 'on' as they would say for cameras, fans, etc. In no way did I mean to come across mean but chose to end the show as the people in the front row would not listen ... I don't always handle things the right way but I'm human and I'm working on getting better at responding, not reacting." 13.

Apology for naked butt (2015) 17 "I deleted the photo of my butt on Instagram not because I thought it was bad but someone close to me's daughter follows me and she was embarrassed that she saw my butt and I totally wasn't thinking in that aspect. I felt awful that she felt bad. To anyone I may have offended I'm so sorry.

It was completely pure-hearted as a joke but didn't take in account there are littles following me!!!" 14. Apology to Love Live anime fans for a poorly worded tweet 18 "I'm really sorry for getting my otaku Beliebers' hopes up, but I'm still not really sure which words in a sentence you need to capitalize so it ended up looking like I tweeted the title of the show." 15. Apology for racist joke (2014) 19 "As a kid, I didn't understand the power of certain words and how they can hurt.

I thought it was okay to repeat hurtful words and jokes but didn't realize at the time that it wasn't funny and that in fact my actions were continuing ignorance." 16. Apology for another racist joke (2014) 20 "Facing my mistakes from years ago has been one of the hardest things I've ever dealt with. But I feel now that I need to take responsibility for those mistakes and not let them linger.

I just hope that the next 14-year-old kid who doesn't understand the power of these words does not make the same mistakes I made years ago. At the end of the day I just need to step down and own what I did." 17. Apology to Ellen (2015) 21 "I think it's just cool to be able to laugh at yourself.

I've done some things. That might not of been the greatest. I just want to be able to own up to some of the things." 18.

Apology for appearance on Ellen (2015) 22 "It's been a minute since I've done a public appearance, and I didn't want to come off arrogant or conceited or basically how I've been acting the past year, year and a half." 19. Apology for apologizing (2015) 23 "People often forget that I'm human, even with their comments and stuff they think it doesn't get to me, but it gets to me. Things that people say bother me, and I gotta be strong enough to keep it pushing.

That's why I wanted to make a video, just to let people know that I'm human ... I'm passionate about being better and growing so I think that this is going to be an awesome chapter in my life." 20. Apology at Comedy Central Roast (2015) "There was really no preparing me for this life.

I was thrown into this at 12-years-old and didn't really know what I was getting into. There's been moments I'm really proud of and moments I'm pretty disappointed in myself for." 21. Apology to mom (2015) 24 "If it wasn't for this woman, let's just say I would have had a way LONGER stupid phase.

I love you and thank you for not giving up on me!" 22. Apology for not apologizing (2015) 25 "Is it too late now to say sorry? Yeah I know that I let you down.

Is it too late to say I'm sorry now?" • Anti-Gay Alaska Republican Launches Desperate New Attack on ... An Alaska Republican has pre-filed legislation that would end all weddings at the state s correctional facilities in order to prevent gay prisoners from getting married. House Bill 218 1 , by Anchorage GOP Rep. Bob Lynn (shown above with U.S.

Sen. Ted Cruz), would also ban conjugal visits and bar the state from housing two spouses at the same prison both of which are already prohibited by Department of Corrections policy. Lynn, Alaska s oldest state lawmaker at 82, told The Alaska Dispatch News 2 that he introduced the bill in response to the legalization of same-sex marriage.

I can t imagine the problems this would cause for wardens, Lynn said. Lynn s bill appears to be unconstitutional on its face, given that the U.S. Supreme Court has held prisoners have a right to marry 3 , although corrections officials can regulate the weddings to some degree.

Sen. Berta Gardner, D-Anchorage, said Lynn s bill would be harmful to prison rehabilitation and re-entry efforts. If you believe people can choose their life partners, just because you have been convicted of a crime and are incarcerated doesn t mean you should lose those rights unless there is a good reason, Gardner told the Dispatch News.

Department of Corrections spokeswoman Sherrie Daigle said prisoners are allowed to marry unless it would negatively impact their rehabilitation, public safety or institutional security. Two other Alaska Republicans Senator Peter Micciche and Rep. Dave Talerico have pre-filed bills in their respective chambers designed to ensure that clergy aren t forced to participate in same-sex weddings, a protection they already enjoy under the First Amendment of the U.S.

Constitution. Rep. Andy Josephson, D-Anchorage, told the Dispatch News he was initially concerned about the bills from Micciche and Talerico but now considers them to be fairly benign.

This probably reflects existing law, but it is unfortunate that it emphasizes an intolerant and unwelcoming viewpoint, Josephson said.

Alaska s legislative session begins Jan.

  • Applecart Theatre - i Am Mark The bold London based storytelling company Applecart is touring the UK this autumn with their show i Am Mark a production that challenges the way we perceive religion and retells one of history s most famous tales. On Wednesday 15 th October they are taking over 1 JESUS THE TERRORIST? MODERN MARK COURTS CONTROVERSY the pace of this production is unrelenting, leaving you both challenged and entertained at the finale something that is not easily achieved.

Henry Austin, The London Economic AN EXPLOSIVE new production casting Jesus as a rebel leader, and featuring a terrorist strapping a bomb to himself, is set to challenge traditional church goers when it opens. Edgy theatre company Applecart claims the controversial modern day makeover of St Mark s Gospel: i am Mark will rid the story of its stuffy religious baggage. Instead they plan to show the Son of God as a revolutionary leader in the dramatic production that features a bomb-laden man counting down the seconds until he blows himself up.

Artistic director Peter Moreton said: We re treating the story with huge respect but it has often been marginalised by the church. Jesus is subversive and political, which doesn t sit well with the dull and often narrow world of organized religion. He added that their production rid the tale of 2000 years of baggage using fresh and sometimes strong language.

Storyteller Phil Summers added: For us a theatre in the heart of the city is a far better setting for a story of social unrest and revolution than an old echoing cathedral. This is why they have chosen Norwich! i Am Mark Using a combination of theatre, film, music and comedy they will tell the entire of Mark s Gospel for one night only at the Garage on the 15 th October 2014.

The production was first performed at the Leicester Theatre in the West End and is touring throughout the UK this autumn during September and October. 2 Iceni Post sponsors advert heyday creative event styling 3 we specialise in weddings as we believe they are one of the loveliest moments in life Related References ^ ( ^ ( ^ heyday creative event styling (
