The town mayor of Diss is inviting people to help raise money for two organisations at his charity dinner.

Julian Mason will be joined by honorary guest speaker former RAF serviceman Duncan Slater, who became the first double amputee to ski to the South Pole.

The veteran, who had a double lower leg amputation when the vehicle he was travelling detonated an explosive device in 2009, has also completed the London Marathon and will be taking on six marathons in six days at the Marathon des Sables in April.

Mr Slater s presentation will be a powerful story of overcoming adversity, teamwork, humidity, compassion and sense of self.

The event will be fundraising for the East of England Air Ambulance and Norfolk Knights Wheelchair Rugby.

The evening, held on Friday, April 1 at The Park Hotel, will include a three course meal, raffle and music.

Councillors and staff from the town council as well as dignitaries from further afield have already reserved their tickets and Mr Mason hopes to host a sell out event to raise much needed funds.

He said: I have very good reasons for supporting my two chosen charities.

I had the misfortune of being witness to a fatal accident some years ago and I was overwhelmed by the fast and expert response by the East Anglian Air Ambulance.

I am also raising funds towards new rugby wheelchairs for Norfolk Knights in support of a council member of staff s husband, who was paralysed following a motorcycle accident in 2014.

Tickets are on sale now at 35 per person and can be purchased from the council offices on Market Hill or from the Park Hotel on Park Road.

If you are unable to attend the fundraising dinner on Friday, April 1, you can still donate by making a cheque payable to Diss Town Council Town Mayor s Charities.
