An investigation is under way after a piece of heavy machinery fell off the back of a lorry on a busy road.

A gearbox weighing several tonnes came off a vehicle near a set of traffic lights on South Quay, Great Yarmouth.

No one was hurt in the incident but the pavement was badly damaged by the falling machine component and a tree planter was also crushed.

The trailer which was carrying the machinery was also damaged.

A spokesman for the haulage company carrying the gearbox, Lincolnshire-based John Somerscales, said an investigation was now taking place into what happened.

He added that there should be more information about the incident on Monday.

An engineer from Norfolk County Council s highways department visited the scene to assess the damage.

A spokesman for the county council said that any repairs would be undertaken in due course.

The spokesman added: We would always look to recover any costs where we possibly can.

Police officers were called at 10am to reports that a large object had fallen from the back of a lorry in South Quay.

A number of roads were closed in the area while a crane was brought in to recover the object and move the trailer carrying the machinery off the road.

Road closures were in place throughout the day on the Hall Quay/South Quay junction, the Nottingham Way/South Quay junction and the Yarmouth Way junction.

Drivers were faced with severe delays into the busy evening rush hour as police were forced to close the major route in the town yesterday for over eight hours.

Many motorists had to navigate all the way around Yarmouth s one-way system in order to avoid the closed roads.

Crowds gathered by the roadside during the day to watch the large piece of machinery being lifted off the carriageway by a tall crane and some spectators took photographs.

It is not clear yet what caused the object to fall from the lorry.
