A drug-addled dumper truck driver who led police on a carnage-strewn 37-mile chase across Norfolk and Suffolk has been sentenced to 14 months behind bars.

Following an argument with his employer, Nicholas Churchill, 40, who had taken drugs, took the truck on July 20 last year.

He was pursued from Norwich to Brandon and destroyed police cars and street furniture along the way, causing tens of thousands of pounds of damage.

In his first court appearance at Norwich Magistrates Court last month, Churchill, of Mounts Pit Lane, Brandon, pleaded guilty to a charge of dangerous driving and admitted being under the influence of drugs at the time.

Sentencing him at Norwich Crown Court today, Judge Anthony Bate said it was a shocking piece of sustained dangerous driving , aggravated by the circumstances in which Churchill took the vehicle and his prior drug usage.

You left a trail of destruction of police vehicles in your wake and put the lives of officers and members of the public at risk, he said.

Police were alerted at around 12.30pm and suspected the vehicle was stolen when it was spotted careering across the Thickthorn roundabout, south of Norwich.

However, it transpired Churchill had taken the 19-tonne articulated dumper truck from his employer at Spixworth quarry following an argument about the air conditioning in his cab. Prosecuting, Andrew Oliver said: This is in itself a dangerous vehicle to be driven on public roads.

After six police cars and a helicopter were gathered to give chase along the A11, the 40-year-old led them on a weaving pursuit along the A140, A11, A134, Santon Road, Methwold Road, Cranwich Heath Road, the B1112, B1106 and Rectory Lane, Brandon.

The truck was described as swerving violently and missing other cars by inches as it travelled down the dual carriageway, Mr Oliver said.

Three police cars22 were badly damaged in the two-hour rampage, one with an officer inside who miraculously escaped uninjured.

PC Simone Sutcliffe, a serving officer for 20 years, said of the incident: I have been hit and spit at, I have been involved in other pursuits, but I have never been so terrified in my career. The court was shown video footage of the chase, filmed from the police helicopter and police cars in pursuit, and heard evidence from officers involved who said they were petrified and feared for their lives .

Mr Oliver described Churchill s driving as erratic and dangerous .

He caused alarm to other road users who had to take evasive action, he added.

With the specific targeting of police vehicles and the fear those police officers understandably had, this is a very serious case of extremely poor driving. Before coming to rest in Thetford Road, Brandon, Churchill had racked up a repair bill of 26,572.36 to police property, as well as causing around 1,500 of damage to his own vehicle and incurring a 600 fee to his employer to have the undriveable truck recovered.

The cost of damage to street furniture is as yet unknown.

Mr Oliver said a blood test showed Churchill to be under the influence of amphetamine, cocaine and cannabis at the time of his arrest. Arresting officers also seized 0.6g of amphetamine from him.

Representing Churchill, Lindsay Cox said: He (Churchill) has not sought to attempt to excuse anything he did in the course of that period. Of Churchill s dispute with his employer, Mr Cox said: The defendant had mentioned on more than one occasion his dissatisfaction of doing hot work in his cab in heated temperatures when there was in this vehicle no air conditioning.

The red mist descended and what happened after that he doesn t and cannot explain.

Mr Cox said Churchill s employer had described him as a good and decent worker and considered his actions on that day to be completely out of character .

He added that Churchill, a father of one, was more concerned about the impact his imprisonment would have on his 14-year-old son, who he cared for as a single parent.

His principle concern has not been for himself, but for his son, he said.

Judge Bate sentenced him to 14 months imprisonment for aggravated vehicle taking, with concurrent sentences of 14 months for dangerous driving, four months for driving while unfit through drugs, and two months for possession of a Class B drug.

He also received a concurrent sentence of 14 months for criminal damage, which Mr Bate said he regarded as quite inadequate in the circumstances of your criminality .

In addition, Churchill was given a two-year driving ban.
