Two people were taken to hospital following a crash which closed Breydon Bridge in Great Yarmouth for two-and-a-half hours.

The bridge was closed until 2.20am this morning after a red Vauxhall Astra and a black Peugeot 206 were involved in a collision on the A12 at about 10.40pm.

Fire crews from Yarmouth and Gorleston attended, along with police and paramedics. A spokesman for the East of England Ambulance Service said: The ambulance service was called at 10.37pm on Sunday to a traffic incident on the A12 in Great Yarmouth. We sent two ambulances and one rapid response car and treated two patients at the scene.

Both casualties were taken to James Paget Hospital for further care. Police said the road was shut from the Acle roundabout to Breydon Bridge until both cars had been recovered from the scene at 2.21am. With Haven Bridge shut for overnight repairs, the Breydon Bridge closure meant motorists were unable to travel in or out of Yarmouth for two-and-a-half hours.

The work on Haven Bridge, costing approximately 230,000, started on February 2 and is expected to continue until April. It involves replacing an area of timber blocks which form the surface on the lifting bridge as well as the supporting timbers. Pedestrian access across the bridge is unaffected but the bridge is closed to traffic from 7pm to 6am overnight.

The scheme is being managed by Eastport UK on behalf of bridg-owner Norfolk County Council.
