Woman killed in motorbike crash in Woodend, Canterbury

CATE BROUGHTON Last updated 19:20, May 31 2015 Supplied A woman has died after she was thrown from a motorbike, then run over, in a crash north of Christchurch. A woman is dead after the motorbike she was a passenger on crashed into a car, throwing her into the path of an oncoming vehicle. The bike was travelling south on State Highway 1 when it struck the stationary car, which was waiting to turn at the intersection with Harleston Rd, about 40 kilometres north of Christchurch about 1.15pm on Sunday.

The impact threw the woman into the northbound lane of SH1 where she was struck by an oncoming van. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Supplied A female motorbike passenger was run over by a car after being thrown from the bike, an eye witness said.

The man who was driving the motorbike suffered severe leg fractures, crash witness James Harrison said. He was taken to Christchurch Hospital in a critical condition. Another person was treated for minor injuries at the scene.

SH1 was closed for five hours between Broad Rd and Gartys Rd while emergency services attended the scene. The road reopened at 6.15pm. The Canterbury Police Serious Crash Unit completed a scene examination.

A police investigation is continuing and the death has been referred to the coroner. It was the second fatality this Queen’s Birthday holiday weekend after a woman was killed when vehicle she was in hit a lgging truck near Te Puke on Saturday. Canterbury Police road policing manager Inspector Al Stewart said, “Canterbury roads are as safe as those using them and we urge the public to drive to the conditions and take extra care at intersections”.

The Westpac Rescue helicopter was diverted to the scene while en route to the Ashley Forest, where a rally car with two occupants had plunged 30 metres over a bank. The driver of the rally car sustained shoulder and pelvis injuries and was flown to Christchurch Hospital. Earlier on Sunday a 32-year-old female motocross rider was airlifted to Christchurch Hospital after crashing during a race and suffering moderate chest injuries.

Two hours later the helicopter was required to transport a 60-year-old male to Christchurch Hospital – he received moderate leg injuries after being thrown from a horse near Methven. – Stuff
