Speedway accident at the Panthers fours EMN-150308-092815009

19:17 Monday 03 August 2015

West Norfolk speedway rider Lewis Kerr is fighting for his life following a sickening crash at Peterborough.

Lewis, 25, from Snettisham, remains in an induced coma at Addenbroke s Hospital in Cambridge, where he was airlifted to following the incident late on Sunday afternoon as he rode for Newcastle Diamonds in the Premier League Fours meeting.

His condition yesterday was said to be stable.

As Lewis s pregnant wife Jessie tweeted a plea for fans to keep him in your thoughts and prayers , Young Stars team boss Dale Allitt who has acted as a mentor to the popular rider said: He is a fighter and, if anyone can pull through adversity, it is him. We re all hoping there will be some positive news in the next 24 to 48 hours. All we can ask is for everyone to remain positive and keep Lewis s family in their thoughts.

Family, friends and the speedway world have been tweeting its support for the popular 25-year-old.

Lewis s pregnant wife Jessie took to the rider s Twitter account early on Monday morning to say: Jessie here, I wish I had some news for everybody but I don t yet, hopefully some today.

Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers.

Thank you to absolutely everybody, the speedway world has been incredible, Lewi will be so gobsmacked xx Jessie.

Fellow Lynn rider Robert Lambert said: Come on fight it through and come out a winner.

We are all thinking of you @LewisKerrRacing.

Former British Speedway Champion and well-known Sky TV pundit Kelvin Tatum said: Sending best wishes to Lewis Kerr let s all keep our fingers crossed that he is able to make a full recovery from his injuries.

Seeing all of the messages wishing him well really does highlight what a special community the speedway family is.

Sunday s meeting was abandoned after three riders collided on the opening lap of heat three of the final when Josh Grajczonek hit Lewis, who slid through the fence at high-speed.

British Speedway Promoters Association (BSPA) chairman Alex Harkness released a statement saying: Lewis is in a stable condition and is in the very best place for care and attention.

There was no alternative but to abandon the meeting.

All of the riders were in no state to continue after seeing what had happened.

Our thoughts are with Lewis and his family, and we wish him a full, successful and speedy recovery.

Lewis joined the Newcastle Diamonds, who he rides for in the Premier League, on loan from King s Lynn at the start of 2013.

He progressed through the ranks at Lynn to make his senior Elite League debut at the Adrian Flux Arena last season.

His incredible six-year rise was capped by landing two Great Britain call-ups for the annual World Cup earlier this year.

Yesterday, Speedway GB postponed the scheduled Premier League Riders Championship draw for 24 hours out of respect for Lewis and his family.
