'gamble' by signing Radamel Falcao, says Teddy Sheringham

Chelsea have taken a gamble in relying on loan striker Radamel Falcao for goals this season, according to former England striker Teddy Sheringham.

The Premier League champions secured a season-long loan move for the Colombian this summer1 as a replacement for Didier Drogba, who departed the club in May, despite Falcao’s poor record at Manchester United last season.

The 29-year-old endured a difficult debut year in England’s top-flight after he scored only four Premier League goals during his time at Old Trafford.

That return did not deter Blues boss Jose Mourinho, though, after he admitted in June2 he wanted to help Falcao find the kind of form that had once led to him being thought of as one of the best forwards in the world.

However, Sheringham thinks Chelsea have still taken a gamble on Falcao although he conceded the former Atletico Madrid and Porto striker was a fine footballer.

Speaking exclusively to 888sport3 ahead of the new season, Sheringham said: “It is a gamble.

From Falcao’s point of view he had a couple of injuries last year and didn’t have the best of form.

“Either Mourinho has seen something in him that other people haven’t or maybe Man United didn’t use him in the best way.

“Whatever it is Chelsea will be looking to exploit that.

He’s obviously a top footballer so it’s just about getting the best out of him.”

Falcao is expected to lead the line for Chelsea in their final pre-season friendly against Fiorentina on Wednesday night and could be in contention to play in the club’s Premier League opener against Swansea on Saturday with doubts surrounding Diego Costa’s fitness.

The Brazilian-born Spain international came off midway through the Blues’ International Champions Cup win over Barcelona last week before missing Chelsea’s Community Shield defeat to Arsenal with a recurrence of the hamstring issue that plagued him last season.
