David Beckham would have worn No 10 at Manchester United if …

Former Manchester United1 star Teddy Sheringham2 has revealed how David Beckham3 wound up playing in the number seven shirt at Manchester United.

The former England international, now in charge of League Two side Stevenage, has admitted asking then United manager Sir Alex Ferguson if he could have the number ten shirt Beckham wore for the club as a youngster.

He told Standard Sport: When I was at Old Trafford there was a story about who d wear the number ten shirt for Manchester United – as it was between David Beckham and myself.

I asked Sir Alex Ferguson: Who s the young kid who s got the number ten shirt?

He replied: Oh, that s a lad called David Beckham.

So I asked Sir Alex: What s the chances of me getting his number ten shirt?

He then asked Becks, who said: Yes, no problem.

I d never been a number seven in my life, and not being a Manchester boy I d never realised how much of an honour it was to wear the number seven shirt for United.

Meanwhile, Sheringham, speaking ahead of Stevenage s derby against rivals Luton Town on Saturday, has encouraged his former United team-mates to come and help train the team he now manages.

He added: If David Beckham is in the area, we d love to get him along to training with my lads.

The same thing goes for all of the players I played with.

I d love the likes of Paul Scholes, Dwight Yorke, or Darren Anderton to come down and take part in a five-a-side for example just to show my lads what top players are all about.

I used to love mixing with really good players when I was a young player because you can learn so much, even from one training session.
