Man in life-threatening condition after car crashes into ditch

One man was in a critical condition after a car crashed into a water-filled ditch on the A143 at Haddiscoe, near Beccles. Firefighters from Great Yarmouth and Gorleston, and the surface water rescue team from Carrow, were called to the accident at 7.09pm yesterday. A spokesman for East of England Ambulance Service said one man in a critical condition was airlifted to Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital for further treatment.

Another man was taken to James Paget Hospital, Gorleston, with minor injuries. Two ambulance crews, a rapid response vehicle, ambulance officer, East Anglian Air Ambulance, and a doctor from Suffolk Accident Rescue attended. Crews used a winch and enhanced hydraulic rescue equipment to release the two people.

The road was closed for a number of hours and firefighters were stood down at 8.40pm, although one fire engine was still at the scene at 9.30pm. A number of accidents have occurred on the Haddiscoe bends area of the road between the village and St Olaves, including a lorry skidding into a ditch in February. And on July 14, 2014 Marcus Nichols, 23, was killed when his motorcycle was involved in a collision with two cars.

Bill Cooper, church warden for Thorpe next Haddiscoe, said he believes drivers misjudge the bends on the road. He said: There have been so many accidents along the road. I think a lot of it is down to the bends and with people not knowing how to take them so they ended up going too fast.

Drivers don t understand the road. It s not a good road for speed with the bends. A lot of it is speed and frustration because a lot of tractors use the road.

South Norfolk MP Richard Bacon said the A143 is a road drivers need to take care on. He said: I know the road well as I spent a lot of time on it during the General Election. It is a hazardous, tricky and very bendy and is the sort of road where people need to take considerable care.

Police warning to drivers after spate of crashes on Norfolk's icy …

Police warning to drivers after spate of crashes on Norfolk s icy roads Police have issued a warning to drivers over Norfolk’s icy roads. Dan Grimmer 1 Sunday, January 4, 2015 8:56 AM Police have warned drivers to take extra care on the region s icy roads, with a string of crashes this morning. Norfolk police said there was frost and ice on many of the county s roads and said drivers should take care.

There have been a number of crashes this morning, including at Norwich Road in Cawston, on the A1064 in Billockby and on the A143 at Haddiscoe. There was also a crash on the A47 at Witton, while firefighters from Holt and Sheringham helped at the scene of a collision on the A148 crossroads at Sharrington. Police would like to remind drivers to take precautions and ensure that your journey is safe by following some simple advice: Make sure all your car lights are working and you have no failed bulbs.

Ensure that dirt is cleared away from light fixtures. Always ensure all windows are fully cleared of frost and condensation before setting off on a journey – it is illegal to drive with obscured vision. Keep windscreen washer fluid topped up as windscreens quickly become dirty from traffic spray and salt from the roads.

Make sure you have sufficient fuel for your journey. Keep the fuel tank topped up. Give yourself extra time for your journey and drive at a sensible speed.

Leave appropriate distances between yourself and other road users. Accept your journey will take longer and don t take risks. Take a mobile telephone with you and make sure it is fully charged.

Carry a mobile charger in the car.
