Graham Jones: Tories hand millions to wealthiest councils – but …

The 300m Local Government handout to Tory councils and Tory marginals is a stitch-up. The Chancellor has handed hundreds of millions of pounds to the wealthiest Tory councils to ease the pain of spending cuts but offered nothing to Hyndburn and what it has offered to Lancashire has been clawed back through back door education cuts. See previous also.

The extra funding for Lancashire of 1.108 m is offset by an Education Service Grant which is 1.177m less than expected. Hyndburn has suffered some of the very highest spending cuts since 2010 (4th), but has received nothing at all in today s announcement. Meanwhile, leafy Surrey one of England s wealthiest shires today gets a hand-out of 24m despite suffering far fewer cuts in recent years.

Lancashire Fire Service received no relief either whilst Lancashire Constabulary found out last week that despite a promise of a freeze in the police grant following the Paris attacks, they would intact received a reduced settlement. Tory MPs became alarmed when they realised their areas might soon see cuts similar to those imposed on the rest of the country. They threatened to vote down the Government s planned cuts until Communities Secretary Greg Clark announced a 300 million transitional grant .

The Government have refused to say where the extra money comes from. Labour analysis shows that 255 million of the grant 85% goes to Tory councils. Areas where Labour runs the council receive just 17 million, despite suffering the harshest cuts since 2010 and having higher levels of deprivation. Steve Reed MP, Shadow Minister for Local Government, said: The Government is covering up where this money has come from and won t explain why almost all of it is being handed to Tory councils just weeks before council elections across the country. Councils that have already been cut to the bone since 2010 are getting nothing but more cuts. The Tories have picked millions of pounds from taxpayer s pockets to buy off their own MPs when faced with a rebellion in the House of Commons.

This is a blatant misuse of public money in a shameless attempt to buy votes and buy off Tory MPs.

The Unhappiest Town In England Has Been Revealed

The unhappiest town in England has been revealed as Blackpool. Despite the fact it s home to the Pleasure Beach and numerous candy floss stalls, donkey rides and sticks of rock, it turns out that the actual residents there are seriously bummed out. There s a massive drugs problem, life expectancy for men is the lowest in the country and it has more poverty and crime than the national average.

The results were determined by how many antidepressants were prescribed all over the country. In Blackpool, over 1.5 million was spent on the drugs, with an average spend of 10.46 per year for a single person that s enough for a three month prescription. Bleak.

It was joined in the top ten unhappiest places by the following towns (figures represent average spend per year per person on antidepressants): St Helens: 9.21 Heywood, Middleton & Rochdale: 8.53 Isle of Wight: 8.43 South Manchester: 8.20 Great Yarmouth & Waveney: 7.71 West Norfolk: 7.67 North East Essex: 7.59 South Lincolnshire: 7.45 West Suffolk: 7.34 Featured Image VIA 1 Image VIA 2 In contrast to this, the happiest places were the following: Brent: 2.12 Newham: 2.18 Redbridge: 2.33 Merton: 2.45 City and Hackney: 2.48 Haringey: 2.51 Southwark: 2.52 Lambeth: 2.57 Hillingdon: 2.63 Barking & Dagenham: 2.66 I suppose it s no real surprise that most of those are in London is it people probably have enough money to spend it on anti-depressants that you don t need a prescription for, right?

Surprising that the recently voted worst town in England 3 doesn t make an appearance in this list though.

The unhappiest towns in United Kingdom have been revealed …

The unhappy area have been announced, and it makes for depressing reading. The study was based on the number of antidepressants prescribed to residents of each town across the country, taken from official NHS prescription figures. And it is bad news if you live in Blackpool, which has been revealed as the glummest town in UK.,we d have thought all the casinos and fun fairs would have kept residents spirits up, but it appears not.

NHS patients in the seaside town got through 1.5 million worth of antidepressants last year, that is the equivalent of 10.46 for every person living there. The resort has the lowest life expectancy for men in England and Wales, at 74.7 years. The study paints a rather unflattering picture of the North West with St Helens, Rochdale and South Manchester in the top five of the list.

Several London schools evacuated amid reports of security threats …

Several schools in south-west London shut today amid reports of security threats. Schools in the borough of Merton including primary Bishop Gilpin were evacuated for police searches. It comes two days after 14 schools in Britain and six in France were evacuated due to a series of similar threats.

A statement on the Church of England school s website said: Bishop Gilpin is closed this morning due to a threat made against Ricards Lodge (not Bishop Gilpin). Police are currently checking Ricards Lodge and several other hospitals and schools. We plan to reopen this afternoon should we get official confirmation that the threat to Ricard’s Lodge is a hoax.

Ricard’s is currently being searched and we have been told to expect an update from the police after 11am. It is the second time in a week that Ricards Lodge was evacuated due to a security alert. Earlier this week in Wimbledon Merton Council s cabinet member for education, Martin Whelton, said he knew of three schools that were evacuated.

He said he understood Ricards Lodge High School, Ursuline High School and Harris Academy Merton had been shut. In a later tweet he added: Everyone has been safely evacuated & the police are investigating. Hopefully it will be resolved shortly.

Ursuline High School in Wimbledon confirmed a bomb threat had been made this morning and all students had been evacuated before Year 11 pupils were sent home. A statement on Bishop Gilpin’s website said this morning: ‘Bishop Gilpin is closed this morning due to a threat made against Ricards Lodge. We have received official clearance to reopen this afternoon. “Children will be welcome in school from 1.30pm onwards.

Children should make their way to class as they would in the morning.

Gates will be staffed.’ A spokesman for the Met Police said threats made today were being treated as ‘malicious communications’.

A Department for Education spokesman said: ‘We are aware of the ongoing incident, police are looking into it and we are monitoring the situation.”

ISAF Sailing World Cup Melbourne about to launch off St Kilda …

Photo Jeff Crow / Sport the Library Melbourne is the first stop of the 2016 Sailing World Cup series and close to 1,000 competitors from around the world are in the final hours before launching off the historic seaside suburb of St Kilda tomorrow, Wednesday December 9, 2015 for the opening bout of the Olympic, Paralympic and invited class racing. Tonight the Victorian sailing community, international delegates, three London 2012 sailing gold medallists and other high profile sports stars are gathering for the World Cup’s official opening event and by midday tomorrow the quest for greatness will be underway. To put sailing front and centre, the seventh edition of the event moved from Sandringham to the specially created St Kilda sailing precinct of the Royal Melbourne Yacht Squadron (RMYS), St Kilda Baths, St Kilda Beach and Catani Gardens.

There’s historical significance attached to RMYS which played host to the Summer Olympic Games in 1956 and where Australia won its first two medals in Olympic sailing. John Scott and Rolland Tasker claimed silver in the 12 metre class, while the team of Doug Buxton, Devereaux Mytton and Alex ‘Jock’ Sturrock won bronze in the 5.5 metre class. Of the five sailing classes at the ’56 games, only one, the Finn class, is still an Olympic class.

As well as the wonderful fusion of the sailing and entertainment precincts, St Kilda offers a huge variety of restaurants, cafes and shops plus sailors have access to local attractions Luna Park, the recently developed skate park and markets. Competition begins tomorrow for the following; 470 Men, 49er Men, Finn Men, Laser Men, 470 Women, 49erFX Women, Laser Radial Women, RS:X Women, IKA – Formula Kite Open, 2.4mR, SKUD18 and Sonar. Eight Olympic classes and three Paralympic classes totalling 180 sailors will vie for top ten selection for Sunday’s Medal Races when a huge summer crowd is expected to line St Kilda Pier and other viewing locations enjoying the expert commentary or live streaming of vision at the stage next to RMYS.

For international followers, racing can be watched in 2D and 3D through the series here 1 International names to watch out for in the coming days include; Tatiana Drozdovskaya (BLR) in the Laser Radial, Laser sailor Giovanni Coccoluto (ITA), Stefano Marcio (RSA), that country’s Laser class qualifier to Rio 2016 and Lee Parkhill (CAN) who finished fifth in the Laser at the Olympic test event in August and won bronze at the Pan American games Toronto in July. London Olympian Colin Cheng from Singapore and Khairulnizam Mohd Afendy (MAS) are two more hoping to feature in the Medal Races on Sunday. In the Paralympic fleets, France’s Damien Seguin won gold in the 2.4mR class at last week’s Para World Sailing Championship.

The Athens 2004 gold medallist finished ahead of another World Cup name to watch, Great Britain and London gold medallist Helena Lucas. Aussie Paralympic gold medallists and 2015 Para World Sailing champions Dan Fitzgibbon and Liesl Tesch have had the British team of Alexandra Rickham and Nicky Birrell on the ropes ever since they relegated the British sailors to bronze place in London in the SKUD18. The ding-dong between three-up Sonar British team of John Robertson, Hannah Stodel and Steve Thomas and Australians Colin Harrison, Jonathan Harris and Russel Boaden is expected to continue at the World Cup.

The Sailing World Cup Melbourne is also the Oceanic qualifier for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. Australians to watch out for Last Friday six sailors were selected for Rio 2016 and at the Sailing World Cup Olympic hopefuls still vying for selection to the Australian Sailing Team’s Olympic squad are competing. Australian Sailing’s Ashley Stoddart (QLD), Joanna Sterling (QLD), Carrie Smith (WA), Jaime Ryan (QLD) just recently secured country qualification at their class world championships in the Laser Radial, Women’s RS:X and Women’s 470, respectively.

As event ambassador and Rio hopeful in the Finn class Oli Tweddell says, “It’s a pretty cool move having the World Cup at St Kilda, there’s great exposure for the sport and lots to do from an international sailors point of view.” On his own campaign between tomorrow and the gold medal round on Sunday Tweddell adds, “It’s always great having a World Cup on home waters and I’m happy to support the event. This regatta I’ll be targeting a few key areas where I made some mistakes at the Finn World Championship in New Zealand a fortnight ago. I’ll be trying to eradicate those from my game.” Irish, Canadian and United States teams have travelled the furthest to one of Melbourne’s signature sporting calendar events.

Canadian Laser sailor Evert McLaughlin goes into tomorrow’s first race with extra zest having beaten the international fleet in the Laser Warm Up regatta that finished yesterday. Pre-regatta confidence for Kiwi 470 sailors Sam Barnett and Zak Merton was boosted when the pair scored a win in the 470 Australian Championship that also wrapped up on Port Phillip yesterday in funky winds. Forecast winds for day one of racing on Port Phillip tomorrow, Wednesday December 9, are variable 10 knots becoming west to north-west 15 – 20 knots early in the morning then turning south-westerly in the middle of the day.

South to south-westerly 10-15 are likely for Thursday December. Racing will take place from 12:00 local time until around 17:00 and ashore the public is invited to mingle with the athletes before and after racing, enjoy the restaurants and bars at the Baths, try kiteboarding, stand up paddle boarding and Discover Sailing on the weekend. Invited classes Thursday sees the invited classes schedule commence for the following; 420; 2.4mR (Open); 29er; Optimist; Laser 4.7; Laser Radial; Minnow; Open Bic; Viper; Liberty.

Wymondham Abbey Advent Spiral 2015

Wymondham Abbey Advent Spiral Wymondham Abbey will once again be presenting an Advent Spiral. It will be laid out in the main part of the church from Tuesday, December 1 to Thursday, December 3. The church will be open on each day from 10am to 6pm.

Advent is the few weeks before Christmas, a time of quiet preparation, as we go into the shortest days of the year. The spiral image can be found in all cultures, ranging from primitive art to 21st century advertising. The spiral is often associated with the cycle of rebirth, time and seasons and can form a spiritual journey.

The idea behind an Advent Spiral is to walk to the centre in search of light. The light is spread with candles throughout the spiral, helping to symbolically bring light into the darkest days of the year. Revd Catherine Relf-Pennington, Associate Vicar at Wymondham Abbey, said: The spiral is an opportunity to enter more deeply into the life of God and find strength, renewal and the peace.

We warmly welcome people of any faith or none at all we hope that all can find it beneficial. There are also two evening sessions on contemplative prayer, on Tuesday, December 1 and Wednesday, December 2, from 7pm to 9pm. During the Tuesday session, there will be an examination of the life and teaching of Thomas Merton, the most famous contemplative of our times.

The Wednesday session will focus on local contemplative Julian of Norwich. To join either of these sessions, please contact the parish office on 01953 607062, or pop into the Abbey and add your name to the lists. Wymondham Abbey, NR18 0PH, 1 .
